Why is this different from a football or basketball player being allowed to make money playing minor league ball?

He's not making money from playing football. It's a different sport, so what is the problem?

Because they are allowed to play minor league ball & make money, but still play NCAA basketball/football (Chris Weinke, Ricky Williams, Trajan Langdon, etc.).

You can make prize money & still compete. Jeremy Bloom was allowed to collect his skiing winnings. The problem with his case is that he wanted to collect sponsorship deals, in addition to prize money.
