i could be reading this wrong

but are they planning on not letting rape victims get abortions?

Quote :
"Blanco expected to sign strict abortion into law soon

BATON ROUGE -- Gov. Kathleen Blanco was expected to sign a strict abortion ban into law after the Senate on Monday gave the measure final legislative approval.

Blanco has said she planned to sign the bill that would ban nearly all abortions in Louisiana, though only if the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling is overturned. The bill by Sen. Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa, could only take effect under two circumstances: the U.S. Constitution is amended to allow states to ban abortion; or the Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade.

Under the measure, doctors found guilty of performing abortions would face up to 10 years in prison and fines of $100,000.

Originally, the bill would have allowed abortions only to save the life of the mother, with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. The House added a provision to allow abortions in cases where the mother's health faces permanent harm.

The Senate voted 27-0 to approve the change and send it to Blanco.

I always wondered what happened to the concept of states rights. Federalism has seemed to encroach on just about every area of state policy. The purpose of state seems to diminish further each day.

Wasn't there some representative who said abortion in the case of rape isn't necesary because a woman rarely gets pregnant in the case of rape? He basically said that if you were pregnant then you hadn't been raped.

Besides that, there are people who think rape victims don't need to have their bodies "raped again" for an abortion.

That is correct. From another artcile...

Quote :
"Blanco said last week she would sign the bill, even though lawmakers defeated an amendment she favored that would have added rape and incest exceptions to it."

Okay, here's what I've heard about the rape/incest thing...

Very few rape victims get pregnant from their rape or repeated rapes.
Most rape victims want to keep the baby to term.

So some might say the incidence of the rape exception abortion is so low that it doesn't deserve legislation. However, there is a history for forcing women to have sex and forcing them to have a baby and in a sense "be owned" by their rapist, whether he is a potential lover, husband, father, etc...and I think that deserves legislation.

Either way, the law banning abortion in the case of rape/incest makes perfect sense to me. If these people really think abortion is murder, then it makes sense that they would want no exceptions.

I applaud these people for remaining consistent in their beliefs and applications of those beliefs.

That said, I think abortion should remain legal.

Nothing in that bill stops people from driving north to get an abortion.

I have strong moral objections to abortion, but the increase in clandestine abortions that would follow prohibiting them could result in a lot of suffering.

I don't care if abortion is legal or illegal so long as no tax dollars are used to pay for it. no federal tax dollars for abortions for any reason.
