if im not mistaken, some players contracts have clauses that prevent them from riding motorcycles.
for some reason, i remember this being brought up with ben before..when he was first drafted and the media caught wind of him riding right after the winslow accident....and we played the "its a free country, i can do what i want" card.

there evidently was a huge controversy over it earlier last month when pictures sufaced of him not wearing a helmet.
Quote : | "Terry Bradshaw quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories.
He has some advice for the guy who hopes to win Number 5.
"Park the motorcycle!"
Video Bradshaw Terry Talks Tough To Big Ben
Defying coach Bill Cowher's wishes and ignoring the potential dangers, quarterback -- and helmetless motorcycle rider -- Ben Roethlisberger said last week that he isn't giving up his beloved bike.
Bradshaw, at a charity golf tournament Monday, told Channel 4 Action Sports that Big Ben needs to change his mind -- especially in light of a recent bike-related injury that may cost Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow his 2005 season.
"Ben, you're starting to make me think you're not that smart," said Bradshaw, looking directly into a camera and pointing his index finger. "Did you not see what that idiot in Cleveland did? You're cool enough without it (the bike). Wait until you're 33, 34. Ride the sucker all you want then."
As the interview ended, Bradshaw walked off, muttering, "I can't believe he's riding that motorcycle. Stupidest thing I ever heard of."
Bradshaw speaks from experience. As a young quarterback, he was told by team owner Dan Rooney to keep his Corvette off the road and in the garage -- and he says he obeyed.
If Roethlisberger's willing to listen to reason, Bradshaw thinks he'll do the same.
"They (Roethlisberger and Cowher) have one thing in common, and that's winning," he said. "As long as you have the same objective, the same passion, you'll work those other things out. Chuck (Noll, the Steelers' former coach) and I did."" |

Quote : | "ROETHLISBERGER IN "PRETTY BAD" MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Steelers quarterback Ben Roetlisberger has been injured in a motorcycle accident near the 10th Street Bridge in Pittsburgh.
(As of 12:10 p.m. EDT, the Tribune-Review's web site had crashed, apparently due to the enormous spike in traffic.)
The accident occurred at 11:37 a.m. He was not wearing a helmet. A veteran police officer has told WTAE-TV that the accident was "pretty bad."
Per WTAE, Roethlisberger has been taken to the trauma unit at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. There are no specifics as to his condition.
A witness to the aftermath of the accident told WTAE at 12:11 p.m. that Roethlisberger was alert and talking to paramedics, but there was "blood everywhere." The witness also said that Roethlisberger was wearing a neck collar. As of 12:17 p.m., neither the Mercy Hospital officials nor the team would divulge any details.
Another witness told WTAE that Roethlisberger "T-boned" a vehicle, struck the windshield, rolled onto the ground and struck his head on the pavement. His eyes were open but he was very confused and disoriented. He said that he was "okay" and tried to get up.
Roethlisberger was criticized in 2005 for not wearing a helmet, which was revealed after Browns tight end Kellen Winslow wrecked his crotch rocket and suffered a torn ACL and internal injuries.
Said Roethlisberger at the time: "I'm pretty conservative and laid back. I'll just continue to be careful. [W]e always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."
There's no indication that Roethlisberger was riding in a group on Monday morning.
Stay tuned." |

BIG BEN GETS "VERY LUCKY"
A league source tells us that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has suffered a broken jaw and various "minor scratches" as a result of his Monday morning motorcycle accident. But, at this point, the team does not believe that he has suffered any serious injuries to body parts that would be used in the playing of football.
"He will have to be thoroughly checked but at this time he looks to be very lucky," said a league source with knowledge of the situation.
We can't fathom Big Ben emerging from the collision without a single arm, hand, elbow, shoulder, leg, knee, hip, ankle, or foot injury that would impact his ability to prepare for and/or play in the 2006 season. The pictures suggest a very serious collision between Roethlisberger's motorcycle and a car. In 2005, for example, concerns regarding the internal injuries suffered by Browns tight end Kellen Winslow when he merely wrecked his motorcycle into a curb quickly gave way to a swollen knee that ultimately was found to have a torn ACL embedded therein.
And if for some reason Roethlisberger couldn't play this year, what would the Steelers do? Make Charlie Batch the starter? Re-sign Tommy Maddox? Bring in Kerry Collins?
Or -- gulp -- bring back Kordell Stewart?
The options would limited, given that the incident happened so late in the offseason. But, for now, it appears that he'll be ready to go after his jaw is healed." |
just read this post on a steelers board, sounds worse:
Quote : | "Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition and in surgery this afternoon following a serious head injury this morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge, police said. Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said. 2:34 pm" |

i dont think it's a question on whether or not he should wear a helmet. it should be whether or not he rides a motorcycle. even wearing a helmet this accident would have been potentially fatal. riding with a helmet is dangerous as well, and i don't think he should be allowed to ride at all.
assuming he comes back from this, i doubt cowher/rooney will allow him to continue riding. he really doesn't have a case against them anymore now, and maybe he'll wise up and agree.
and if the reports about severe injuries to both knees are accurate, then his season and maybe career are indeed in danger of being over. i guess it depends on what "severe" means in this case.

i'll preface this by saying i think he should have been wearing a helmet, because i live by the "better safe than sorry" rule, but:
1) there is no law in Pittsburgh saying he has to wear a helmet
2) he has no specific clause in his contract saying he is not allowed to ride a motorcycle
3) cowher never told him he shouldn't ride, just to be safe
i'm sure plenty of you guys on here do things you shouldn't do (whether legal or not) just because you like doing it. if he enjoys riding a bike (even if it is without a helmet) and it's all on the up and up...he's really not doing anything wrong. yeah he's being risky, but we all are to some degree. i don't know how necessary all this flack is. obviously he didn't want this to happen, and now that is has (and i hope everything turns out ok) i'm sure he'll take some new precautions. 6/12/2006 3:15:25 PM |

cowher told him he didn't like him riding. obviously to keep the peace he wasn't any more forceful than that, but you can be sure that won't be the case anymore.
and just for the record. cowhers oldest daughter used to get a ride to school (princeton) on the back of a motorcycle, but after all the stuff with winslow and other injuries came out, and the roethlisberger discussion, he forbid his daughter to continue this.
so you can see where he stands. 6/12/2006 3:20:05 PM |

^^^right, but they obviously don't prohibit them from doing so. ben has said in interviews that he does it because it relaxes him. the accident was in downtown pittsburgh, not out on some country road where he was going 100 mph and popping wheelies. nobody really knows the details of what happened, so what if it was just a simple traffic violation gone bad?
my point is that it doesn't seem like he was acting irresponsibly by riding a motorcycle. my guess is that more athletes act irresponsibly when driving their cars then he probably did on his bike. it's just unfortunate that this happened.
