I just spilled the remains of a can of coca cola into the top of a crt monitor.. its image near immediatly blacked out. I turned it off and unplugged it. then got a spare crt out of the closet.
yeah. it was stupid to have half a can of coke on top of a crt, but is there any hope for it? its currently draining out of the bottom, but the case seems sealed shut, no screw holes or anything. I've heard there is a fairly incredible amount of voltage stored inside a crt, but I was hoping to open it and atleast wipe it off.
should I trash it, or will it be alright once it dries out? I would think the coke residue would cause issues.. and it is an 8 year old monitor
planned to eventually get an lcd anyhow, just not yet.. 6/16/2006 12:09:24 AM |

It's easy, just open it up, but be careful. Rub your feet on the carpet in the wintertime to be sure there's no charge on you. Wipe it off (plugged in is OK) and re-seal it.

As long as you dont try to pull the cap off the CRT tube, it should be fine. As long as you didn't hear any popping or hissing or smoke coming from the thing, it might very well be alright with a rubdown of alcohol and an overnight dryout.
Most CRT's have the screws either hidden under stickers/feet/labels, or are under the swivel base. Another common thing is having compression latches joining the front bezel with the rear, if that's the case then you can pop it open with a sharp flathead screwdriver.

While it was dumb to drop Coke on it, accidents happen, and at least he is asking a question with at least some background thought put into it.6/16/2006 1:11:55 AM |

ROFL dude...I am not gonna argue with you, but that's kinda dumb.
There's lotsa very high potential outside the CRT tube.6/16/2006 1:13:40 AM |

If its a regular CRT monitor, the BIG danger is the flyback transformer, which is firmly attached to the CRT housing
If you avoid touching any part of it, you are pretty well safe if the monitor's off and unplugged.
^BTW douche how many CRT innards have you been all up inside? I'm going to guess 0. 6/16/2006 1:17:49 AM |

note* he did not specify that a CRT isn't without power once you unplug it.

I have a bit more common sense than to go poking around with my fingers thanks for the confidence
I found the screws, they were semi-hidden under plastic bits. took off the casing, cleaned the metal cage HP put over everything, declined to take off the cage, and put it back together. left overnight. just plugged it back up and everything seems to be fine. I know there's some residue left down in there, but its dry and eh.. If it aint broke..
thanks.. 6/16/2006 2:33:05 PM |
