well... im not sure if the lock box might have worked the way he said it would... but then again it'd been more helpful to our generation and all concerned than the $600 dollar check our parents got.

Haha... sorry about the off topic...

Of course, we can trade links from experts all night and day from supporters and detractors. I guess it comes down to deciding who to believe. Though I would think that Al Gore should be very far down on that list.

Hey, it's no big surprise the world is pushing ever faster toward oblivion. What's most annoying is that people will go see this movie, shrug and say "Oh, how tragic!" or "Oh, what lies!" and then do jack shit about anything in the real world to counteract the possibility of it being true. It's as if people have completely lost trust in any reporting whatsoever because we've been so jaded by the media or government lying to us. It's so hard to motivate people to do anything at all, I suppose because apathy is inevitably easier.

that idiot isnt boring though...in the television era, hell since the nixon kennedy debate, its about the more charismatic candidate...the one who knows how to talk to people in a more personal way...bush is more charismatic and less boring than both kerry and gore...clinton was more charismatic and less boring than bob dole...michael dukakis was bland...reagan obviously knew how to play to the tv cameras as a former actor...etc

No, I know why he got elected- I mean, he's very down home and personable in a very everyman sense. But I still think this country needs to elect men on some better criteria.

I mean, can you believe that, on the Discovery Channel survey, they elected RONALD REGAN as the greatest American to ever live? GWB was number 6. Americans piss me the fuck off sometimes.

as far as global warming though, i took lots of science classes at state...i was fortunate enough to have relatively nonbiased professors educate me on some things...and with regards to global warming, i learned a few things that ANY scientist or science student should know

1. Global CO2 levels have DEFINITELY risen over the last 100 years
2. Global mean temperatures have DEFINITELY risen over the last few decades
3. Detailed data does not go back far enough for us to extrapolate any accurate analysis of whether these temperature increases are a direct result of rising CO2 levels or if they are simply natural Earth cycles
4. General data from soil core samples, etc shows that the Earth has had high levels of CO2 before with lower temperatures, suggesting they are not necessarily directly related in this case
5. There is evidence that supports global warming and evidence that refutes global warming.
6. There is no evidence that explicitly proves global warming does or does not exist

people can jump on either side to try and make their point, make their money, etc

but theres not a set-in-stone answer

We have ice cores to 800,000 yrs back and sediment cores from the ocean floor that span back millions of years. The last time CO2 was this high was 2.7 Million years ago, which happens to be coincident with the onset of No. hemisphere glaciation. Comparision with past glacial-interglacial cycles suggests that we should actually be at the begining of a cooling phase (and decreasing CO2).

I think you're refering to what is know as the Faint Young Sun paradox. High levels of CO2 have been invoked to explain the geologic evidence of liquid water during times in the past when the sun was about 30% less intense.

inconsistent with your #2 point

Ok... if global warming exists which i think most scientists agree on(the vast majority unless of course your salary is paid for by exxon for some bullshit like that).... And even if we humans are not a major cause ( which i think most scientists would not agree with: not to confuse anyone there... i think they would say we are a major reason).... Global Temperatures ARE RISING and they WILL have an impact on millions if not billions of people on this planet... Is it not human nature then... even if its not our fault to try to change things... reverse things... so that the earth remains habitable for us...? Or on the reverse if it is our fault why not try and reverse things also?... I mean once you see there a problems... And you see where your headed... Why not act?... And if Evermagenta is right and people are too apathetic then maybe humans do deserve to die out... But... i dont think so... i dont want to Die because of all you "Global Warming is a scam created by liberal scientists wanting more funding and by the Jews." Idiots... but maybe thats just me...

Of course not. I'm just as lazy as the rest of America, and besides, groups like Greenpeace end up looking just as stupid (it's all liberal propaganda, am i rite?!) to the public as the government telling us that oil will last forever. But I'm conscious of my inactivity and ready for the apocalypse, which will probably be brought on by overpopulation within my lifetime. I've been accused of killing the environment by not recycling one extra bottle by some of my more tree-hugging friends. But if they knew just how little of a dent polymer recycling was making (not to mention how difficult some of the processes can be), they'd be just as depressed as I am.

It's so hard to find meaning in a world in which nothing is to be believed.

But here's the list of Student Organizations registered with SORC:
http://www.ncsu.edu/sorc/myOrgs/index.php

I have some friends who are Campus Greens.

no its NOT inconsistent with my #2 point

"global warming" does not refer to temperature rise...it specifically refers to anthropomorphic temperature rises due to CO2 which is unprovable

just because we see temperatures going up over 25 years, some scientists think they can somehow understand 2.5 billion years worth of weather and global cycles and trends

seems pretty cocky and foolish to me....whereas scientists who are uncertain about global warming...the scientists that follow the scientific method and dont jump to false conclusions...the ones who know theres not enough evidence to correlate manmade emissions to global temperature increases without factoring in other things...the ones who arent dumb enough to believe "there was a big hurricane, thats definitive proof of global warming"...the scientists who trust data and not liberal media rhetoric

global warming
n.

An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change.

^at least that says "in recent decades"

the point i'm trying to make is when the scientific community refers to global warming, they are not taking it to the simplest level of global warming = temperatures getting warmer around the globe...more specifically, its recent temperature changes attributed to manmade CO2 emissions

i'm not trolling here...but the definition isnt as literal as it sounds

I'm saying I disagree.
Global warming refers to just that. A rise in the mean temperatures of the globe over the past however many years. I'm no scientist, but I've read plenty of articles that discuss the possible causes of global warming. If "global warming" meant "a rise in the mean temperature of the earth due to human causes", then a discussion on the long-term geological causes of global warming would be meaningless.

For what it's worth, Al Gore's site says this:
Quote :
"The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it’s already happening and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence. The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable."

Whether you agree with the statement or not, what it implies is that global warming is not necessarily the product of human activities.
