So I have dvd-r's that say they are 4.7gigs... and I have video files that say, are 700mb...so why, when I'm burning them on to a DVD do none of those videos fit on to the DVD's? If the files are say, divx, then how do you figure out what size they are when put into a dvd format?

why can't someone just help me instead of pointing out that I'm clueless when it comes to certain tech issues?

If you only want to copy the files to DVD for use on a computer, burn it as a data disc.
Otherwise, encode it at a lower quality for playback on a DVD player.

Why does everyone capitalize all the letters in "Mac"? Its not "MAC" its "Mac".

1) A CD-R has 700mb. A DVD-R has 4.7gigs (~5000mb). Elementary math concludes a 700mb video file (singular) should fit on a DVD-R. Multiple video files (plural) may not all fit.

2) Divx will not play in most DVD players (as Omar mentioned) that hook up to TVs.

3) Most of us are going to assume if you are asking these questions, you probably didn't encode it in Divx yourself, and what you are trying to do is something illegal. Go to Google for help. (It really isn't that hard ... I didn't know how to copy DVD movies until last night ... took me less than an hour to figure it out.)

Training is often required, even when installing training wheels.

this post is like one of those times where someone asked a question they could have found in the manual to the thing they are trying to use.

you know here's the thing about posting on a message board such as the 'tech talk' section of tdub...sure, I could go and read and read about the subject in question and maybe after sifting through 30 links and useless info, I might be able to find the answer to my question in a roundabout way..... OR, I could ask a specific question on a board where there may be people who can give me not only a shorter and more direct answer, but other helpful tidbits.

It comes with the territory of hiding your face and being generally snooty on this site.

basically what most people are saying is that you don't even have enough knowledge to act a valid question - do a little bit of reading or have someone baby you through an lengthy explanation which would require some feedback from you to figure out exactly what it is you want to accomplish and if what you are doing is even worth the trouble - people don't care enough to try to decipher the vagueness of your posts

it's a pretty simple assumption that you downloaded the divx files b/c there is no way in hell you know how to create them with the assumed knowledge you have after reading this post and others by you - if you want to do something illegal - go learn it on your own - there are more than enough resources on the web to assist you (vcdhelp.com/dvdrhelp.com is where you should go) - there aren't instructions on here of how to smoke pot after you bought some from your dealer either

in the long run from what you have said so far - which isn't a whole lot - it'd be cheaper and a whole lot easier for you to buy a $50 dvd player that played divx (i haven't checked prices recently but 50 should be reasonable if not high) and burn the files to a cd and stick them in the dvd player

actually... if you look at the thread... a link to the appropriate website to answer the question was given...

all it takes is clicking and then looking at that site (i didnt' ahve any trouble finding the info, you shouldn't either)

^^^^ yeah, snooty me

^^for the record, they were episodes of 'The Office' which I was lead to believe where legal to download. If I'm wrong, then my apologies, I guess I must have read the incorrect information somewhere on a helpful message board.

^Yes, the link was given by Omar after a whole bunch of unhelpful posts. Yes, it was helpful once he listed it, but it took a lot of nonsense to get there
