SO NOW WE GET TO MATE!

GO CANES!

this is actually a serious soap box thread. i believe our facination with sports roots back to when our belonging to the "winning" group meant survival. it is instintual for us to root for our sports teams. what do you think?

Until tonight, none of the teams I root for have won a championship in my lifetime (excpet for Braves in 95 and Mets in 86 (geography thing)). If cheering for a winner in sports were to equal survival, I would have been dead long ago. After all, liking the Jets, Panthers and Bobcats isn't exactly a winning combo most of the time.

back in my Psych classes one of those random things i read about was a correlation between an increased testosterone level in males and whether or not their sports team had won that day...

don't remember if experiments were done to establish causation, but it was an interesting correlation at least...

I've not had an instinctive desire to root for any sports teams, and neither have my brothers, but that's because our dad doesn't like any American sports (and thus doesn't care about them).

I bet if a study was done, there would be more evidence to show that it was a learned behavior, that depends on ones' friends and parents.

My parents weren't really into sports. Only thing they ever watched at all was NASCAR and they never really rooted for it.

I on the other hand am pretty hardcore rooting for State basketball/football and got into it during the NHL playoffs.

I think I had more testosterone in my system today too, but that could be because I got some after the wife and I watched the game and we were both in a damn good mood. Hey maybe Smath is on to something.

There's always the classic George Orwell essay, the Sporting Spirit.

http://www.george-orwell.org/The_Sporting_Spirit/0.html

Quote :
"Nearly all the sports practised nowadays are competitive. You play to win, and the game has little meaning unless you do your utmost to win. On the village green, where you pick up sides and no feeling of local patriotism is involved. it is possible to play simply for the fun and exercise: but as soon as the question of prestige arises, as soon as you feel that you and some larger unit will be disgraced if you lose, the most savage combative instincts are aroused. Anyone who has played even in a school football match knows this. At the international level sport is frankly mimic warfare. But the significant thing is not the behaviour of the players but the attitude of the spectators: and, behind the spectators, of the nations who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests, and seriously believe--at any rate for short periods--that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue."

Quote :
"If you wanted to add to the vast fund of ill-will existing in the world at this moment, you could hardly do it better than by a series of football matches between Jews and Arabs, Germans and Czechs, Indians and British, Russians and Poles, and Italians and Jugoslavs, each match to be watched by a mixed audience of 100,000 spectators. I do not, of course, suggest that sport is one of the main causes of international rivalry; big-scale sport is itself, I think, merely another effect of the causes that have produced nationalism. Still, you do make things worse by
sending forth a team of eleven men, labelled as national champions, to do battle against some rival team, and allowing it to be felt on all sides that whichever nation is defeated will "lose face". "

I think of the neverending supply of stories: Koreans treating each national match against Japan as if a loss will result in the Japanese Imperial Army marching through the streets of Seoul; the Iranians treating their soccer victory over the United States as if they had burned down Washington DC itself; the British and the Argentinians after the Falkland War; the British and the Germans who love to constantly bring up the Second World War; the Columbian soccer player assassinated because he accidentally scored on his own goal in a critical match; players who's houses were burned by angry mobs because they refused to play for their national team... Sports on the international level bring out the best and worst in people.

I saw some moron with a hockey stick stuck out of his car today, I mean enough already. It saddens me that we celebrate professional sports like this, why can't we celebrate real achievements like when the engineers invent some cool new gadget we oughta have a parade, they worked hard to improve our life through technology. Or when a heart surgeon saves someone's life through some cool new surgery etc... that oughta get more recognition. All these dudes did was hit a puck on some ice and slam into some other dudes engaged in the same arbitrairy and pointless activity. Grrrrrr....

What is entertaining is a point of view. To me, a bunch of guys running around after some ball is pointless (animals chase balls, why pay good money to watch other human beings do it?), but whatever floats your boat.

Because people are fucking stupid, and sports like religion are the opium of the masses. Can't worry about what Congress is doing and the latest bullshit laws they are passing, I have to get to the TV to celebrate the sunday tradition of men in tights, playing grab ass over a ball in a grassy field (IE: American football).

We're animals too, in case you didn't know. Besides, just because you suck at sports doesn't mean people who enjoy them are idiots or sub-human. Look -- I'm extremely sympathetic that you got picked on by jocks in middle school. These athletes have a high level of skill, and are fun to watch. Hockey games are exciting.

I know, right! People are.. stupid, that's why they like sports! All people except for me, of course! I'm too smart to fall for that "chasing a ball around in tights" shit.

Hockey to me, is as about as exciting as watching grass grow. I could easily become a proficient athelete if I chose to do so, but whats the point? To chase after a fucking ball. Nice. People glorify these guys, when they contribute nothing to the world, but the people who really make everything happen the accountants, doctors, engineers, programmers, scientists, etc get overlooked and ignored. I don't think there should be student fees supporting athletics in anyway. I've never been to any stupid football, basketball, baseball, *ball game and will never go.

Personally I prefer real sports like rallysport or videogaming. I have no desire to watch a bunch of guys in tights feel around on each other, while they try and catch a ball.

Yeah I could easily make millions of dollars but choose not to as well.

They contribute entertainment. Are you suggesting we live in a world without any form of release, entertainment, or anything aesthetic? Look dude, I'm a programmer. I love many of the breakthroughs in science. I keep up with them. So do other educated people. Bitching about the fact that the typical Joe on the street doesn't want to throw a parade over the invention of the binary search tree? Are you a fuckin' ass?

Too bad. You lose. I don't think there should be student fees supporting the "african american student center", but I have to pay them. Oh well!

Nobody's trying to force you to go. I'm just pointing out that your assertion that sports are all stupid, and that you're obviously "enlightened and above them" is stupid. You're not.

Ahahahahahhaahahahaha

ahahahahahahahahahahha

ahahahahahahahahahahah

I enjoy video games as much as the next closet-geek, but God almighty dude. To claim that video games are above actual sports on the "sports" hierarchy? That is beyond ludicrous. I wonder how many nerds like you sit around pontificating about how they could be making millions of dollars and having lots of sex as an athlete (bwahahahaha), but how they choose (LOL) not to, because life as a poor, lonely, piece of shit videogame addict is the moral high ground.
