Of course Iraq overshadows the Afghani issue, but I'm mildly surprised a politician hasn't included withdrawing from Afghanistan in with all the rhetoric, or maybe I'm just not paying enough attention. 6/21/2006 12:07:50 PM |

Osama?
Aside from this thread, I can't remember that last time I heard mention of Afghanistan.

Exactly. But we are still spending money over there, money that taxpayers are paying into the system. You here talk about withdrawing from Iraq, where we are fighting terrorism (that's why we are there right? right?), why not leave Afghanistan, too. 6/21/2006 12:13:29 PM |

Afghanistan now--or at least in the immediate future--falls under NATO jurisdiction.

There's been more money spent in Afghanistan than Iraq even as of now.
NATO means nothing. 6/21/2006 1:02:43 PM |

i thought the main problem people had with the iraq war was that iraq didnt seem to be linked to 9/11
when osama and afghanistan were linked to 9/11
so dont you want to catch osama or at least try? or did you already forget 9/11? 6/21/2006 1:03:32 PM |

from what ive heard in the news, most people believe he is somewhere in the mountains between afghanistan and pakistan
but if you know where he is, lure him out to do lunch, k, then we can capture him 6/21/2006 1:05:48 PM |

More than 340 airstrikes were carried out in Afghanistan over the last 3 months, compared to 160 or so in Iraq.
You'd think he wouldn't be hiding in the same mountain hole for this long. 6/21/2006 1:07:06 PM |

The question is more of one of these "well, if you are going to do this, then why do this". I'm not sure what argumentative strategy it is, but your point is exactly what I mean. This should probably go in the WMD thread, where McDanger took the after thought "but he was a bad man, he needed to be removed" stance that many folks use as their justification. I'm just tired of the shakey ground of the whole operation. Why are we there (Iraq)? Are we there really to fight terrorism? Then we should never leave per Bush's doctrines to protect our country, and the politicians should stop the bullshit pull-out talks if the only reason is to get re-elected. If we aren't there for terrorism, and at the end of the day it was a good thing he was removed, then I still want some leaders heads on platters for duping the public into a war.
Regardless, I don't think spending big time dollars in an actual real military style war is going to prevent 9/11s, not one bit. Spend my money on just generally from preventing them to get into the country. I'd hate to think 1 trillion dollars couldn't create an air tight system for keeping the scum out of our land.

If you rarely hear Afghanistan mentioned, you're not paying attention.
They talked about it all last week because of the new major ops going on there and the increase in attacks from Taliban holdouts. 6/21/2006 8:13:12 PM |

The first time I had really heard about it in months, and only because of a new initiative.

Past few weeks isn't shit. What about all the months since a long time ago? I can only imagine how much money we have spent there for nearly zero results. Spend that 500 billion trying to be reactive on proactive causes - locking the borders down, being ultra selective about who we let in, having 5-10 year monitoring periods for any immigrants once we let them in, etc.6/23/2006 2:00:02 PM |
