how long does it take to receive your gmat score and should i take a class or just study a book?

you get your score immediately on the computerized test, and you get your official score with the essay score in the mail within 4-6 weeks (i think)

Yeah you'll see your score right away, and the "official score" (which stays the same 99% of the time) arrives in 2-6 weeks.

I studied a book and did well enough for me (590). I wouldn't spend big bucks on a course.

Right, You'll have the option of seeing your score or cancelling it when you complete the exam. Your official score will be available both online and by mail ... online usually is faster to access.

Studying for it is completely up to you. Various test prep programs will tell you how much your score can be boosted for a lot of money. I personally feel had I spent an ungodly number of hours studying months ahead of time, I MAY have boosted my score by 30-50 points. I'd recommend checking out some books and learning the test format ahead of time at a minimum.
