I'm trying to get set up with some new car insurance, my current one is too expensive (like 150$ a month for a 95 honda civic that i drive less then a mile to work). Any advice on coverages? Theres so many options, i dont know what to pick.

Goddamn. Tickets, etc?
If you can get USAA, do it, but I'm guessing if you haven't already, that you can't.

Meanwhile, I'll be paying $200+ month as an inexperienced driver, once I have a car

Naw I actually only have had two tickets (First got dropped completely, 2nd got reduced to 64 in a 55 so that shouldnt effect me). My insurance has always just been run through my parents, they make me pay too much. I'm trying to get my own now so I dont have to pay a shit ton.

Call Farm Bureau. It's the largest property insurer in NC and is member owned.

I looked around online and Progressive ended up the best for me. I need to call USAA for a quote though.

I near about fell out when we got married and decided to put our insurance together because what we pay combined as a married couple with State Farm is less than what I was paying alone with the Farm Bureau. Multi-car discount =

shit, i only pay slightly more than that for 6 months with a 95 accord. I'm guessing that is comp liability, maybe even collision. All you really need on a car that old is liability.

do not opt out of the Uninsured insurance and go ahead and get an underinsured coverage policy.

If you are in a serious wreck at the fault of someone else, the insurance most likely will run out before all your debts are paid. An underinsured policy is inexpensive and will kick in when the other guys coverage expires.

USAA is king... but you have to have military ties. My wife had State Farm and was paying $230 every 6 months for basic coverage. USAA added her to my policy with the same coverage for $65 per 6 months.

Look into their credit card and their investment options too. There isn't much that USAA isn't great at. Oh and their customer service is stellar. Its NOTHING like typical business operations.

Scooters don't require insurance here?

I had comprehensive on mine in India.

One advantage of Farm Bureau is that they don't use OEM or used parts, only new parts from the manufacturer. If they come close on the price, they are your best bet in terms of getting parts that will actually go together and look right when it is finished.

Also they will cover in and all modifications or equipment in your vehicle without extra cost. Just make sure you have your receipts. They will cover fancy rims and all that shit for the same price as if you had a plain stock ride.

We have geico, 2 cars, one 1992-ish the other 1997. We're paying $200-something/month, partly b/c my husband rear-ended a woman a few months back. But still...Does anyone have experience with Geico vs other insurance companies, and have a recommendation? As in, would something like State Farm be significantly cheaper?

No I shopped around and found Geico and Farm Bureau to be two of the cheapest.

I originally had Progressive through AAA (the other two would not underwrite the policy) which was like 100/month for a symbol 27 or 28 car, something mad high. When I moved to Scotland Neck and bought a house instead of renting, I went to change it and Progressive wanted to fucking double my premium. I told them to take that shit and stick it in they ass. GEICO was actually the cheapest by about 20 bucks, but like I said, Farm Bureau doesn't try to fuck you as hard in the claims end, and its nice that my agent lives 2 houses down from me. Plus I get a discount for having homeowners and auto policies with them.

State Farm has been good to me. I used to pay $40/mo for my 97 Blazer with only liability and uninsured/underinsured (Like someone said up there, thats all u really need with an older vehicle). I got a new vehicle, and I pay around $80/mo with full coverage driving 30 mi to work one way. I doubt the ticked that counted will affect you much, especially if it was a few years ago.

i actually am an adjuster for farm bureau, and this is not just me sucking up to my employer, but just from dealing with other insurance companies, farm bureau handles claims better than any other company. the agents are more knowlegable than with the direct insurance people (ie usaa geico). whoever you go with, take this advice, DO NOT buy minimum limits for auto liability insurance. i have seen people lose their house because they hit someone with a car, killed them, and only had 30k coverage to pay for it. i would advise 100k/300k minimum.

All these farm bureau, state farm, geico, progressive companies have no markets but their own.

Go to an independent agent and have them shop for you. They do the shopping, and can get you a quote with like 20 companies to choose from. (Hartford, Cincinnati, Ohio Casualty, Penn National, Fireman's Fund, Travellers, Chubb, Auto-Owners, etc)

Plus, in most cases, you develop a better relationship with your independent agent.

I will say also as a rental car agent who worked in a bodyshop for damn near 2 years and knowing several agents and being in almost constant contact with them that the agents of Farm Bureau are some of the nicest and seem to care the most about their insureds or claimants.

The damn GEICO adjustors are usually just out to settle things as cheaply as possible and will cut you out of a rental in a heartbeat. They are fairly cuthroat, but at least they come out and take care of you in person. They will pretty much only accept used or OEM parts only which often don't match up worth a shit.

Progressive also will come out and assist you personally and their adjustors that I have met were all very nice. Again though, used parts or OEM pretty much only thing you will get there.

State Farm would only send out somebody if you have a dispute with the service first shop or weren't taking it to a service first shop. They were nothing to be impressed with, as most times the customer never even met them.

Nationwide is the WORST for claims service. They will take you to the fucking cleaners. The shops are forced to use almost all used parts and are constantly on the shop to get it out quick as they can. They encourage sloppy and quick service in order to minimize time in the shop and consequently in the rental. They will also stick you in the absolute shittiest small car, even if you have $50/day coverage or drive a Suburban with 7 kids. Avoid them like the plague and get a lawyer if you are hit by an Nationwide insured. I have had personal experience as a claimant with them and they fucked me and the bodyshop over that did the work, and it was a blue ribbon repair shop.

Yeah, my husband and I have State Farm. We have 3 cars, 2 of which are fully insured and one that is only liability and we pay less than $150 a month. And I think he has 2 tickets that are still actively affecting our insurance right now, but that's a sore subject .

I have USAA and my parent's swear by it, but I'm in a bad situation too. My car insurance is higher than the legal limit and I had to sign a waiver for them to continue to insure me. Mine's that way because I had two wrecks, one in high school, and the other right after I graduated, and then my boyfriend totaled my car a year and a half ago. Even though I didn't have anything to do with it USAA blamed me and raised my insurance, and it still hasn't gone down.

Right now I am under my parents plan (which i pay them for) and at $196/month I feel like i could get a plan on my own for cheaper.

Is $196 reasonable with the following??
-1997 Honda Civic
-1 ticket reduced to 9+ over in Aug 2005
-1 ticket reduced to improper equipment in Aug 2005 (does this still effect insurance)
- Minor Fender Bender which was my fault; damage to both cars was <$4000
- 1 ticket for 14+ in march 2004 had a PFJ

typically you will have cheaper insurance on your parents' plan unless they have a bad driving record - there are plenty of sites that allow you to input the information you typed here and give you a quote - geico / progressive / etc

Do you have comprehensive and collision?

If so, get rid of that. It's a 1997, so you'll wind up spending more on the insurance payments in a year than the car is worth.

Liability only is the way to go.

$196 is really really steep. I pay $140/month for two cars, an '04 4runner and an '05 jetta with comprehensive coverage.

Wow - that is really expensive - I pay $117 per month for a 99 Dodge Ram and an 04 Dodge Stratus for comprehensive and collision with 3 people on the insurance, and thats with noninsured drivers covered and 100k/300k coverage - Allstate kicks ass

from a personal injury perspective, UIM/UM coverage ftw

and I pay $110 per month for a 07 mazda3 and my coverage is out the wazoo (more than 30/60, it's at least 250/500)...liability, collision, UIM/UM, med pay. state farm.

yeah it's a lot for one car; call me paranoid. i work with this shit day in and day out...there's no way i've ever going to be slacking on my auto insurance.

I use state farm although I doubt you'll find a cheaper rate than what you pay under your parents. Given your driving record though the price you pay doesn't seem to unreasonable.

To put in my $.02..

I have nationwide and pay about 75/mo. I havent had any problems with them, but then I havent been in an accident or had a ticket in about 5 years *knock on wood*.

My bf had statefarm, got in an accident on his motorcycle where it was the other guy's fault, fractured his nuts, and they made him get a lawyer and go to court to get some kind of money for the damage done to his balls and to completely pay off his hospital bills. (Statefarm was both parties' insurance)

and this is all I know.
