Or so it seems.
I'm dancin' to a different beat today. No cars...just woodwork. Trying to get the brightwork on my boat lookin' good.
It's been two years since it's been touched, and the last time, we coated the wood using Cetol, which is supposed to be a great UV and weather proofing coating for marine woods. What sucks is that the stuff has some iron pigmentation to help guard against UV, and the shit has an orangish-brown tint to it. I think the shit sucks. So I am stripping it down and going back with varnish.
Lots of work, but I think it will look much better.
On another note, I bought an 18 dolla heat gun at Northern and the fucker shit the bed already. I suppose you get what you pay for, and I'm probably gonna spring for the Milwaukee come tomorrow. 6/25/2006 7:08:40 PM |

I've never messed with teak. Is it heavy? 6/25/2006 7:58:02 PM |

Never had any really big chunks of it...but it ain't really heavy. Not like oak. 6/25/2006 8:04:58 PM |

Teak makes a beautiful floor too, but very expensive.
I bought a ~6 ft strip of 1/2" wide teak strips from West Marine last year for $26 to replace some trim pieces on the boat. 6/25/2006 8:20:42 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
And that is what sucks most about teak. It ain't cheap by any means.
And West Marine sucks donkey nuts. 6/25/2006 8:30:56 PM |

Yeah, I've heard of koa, but I've never used it...it's used for a lot of electric guitar bodies because of its density. 6/25/2006 11:29:22 PM |

What sucks is that the thing shit the bed after less than an hour of run time, with much screeching and sparking. I at least got one of my 6' brow strips stripped down.
I will be taking it back either this evening or tomorrow and swapping it out. Been thinking about moving up to the Milwaukee gun. 6/26/2006 12:04:43 PM |

what are you gonna do with the heat gun on wood? 6/26/2006 12:30:25 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
It is the best method, hands down, for stripping old varnish/paint off of wood.
Basically, you hit it with the heat gun, it bubbles up, and you scrape it off.
The Cetol that I had the wood coated with didn't bubble up very much, but scraped off very easily after getting hit with some heat.
Varnish comes up quicker'n hell. And latex paint on wood...LIKE BUTTAH.
I like it much better than chemical stripping because there's much less mess (and the good chemical paint removers I've used contain methylene chloride, which is a carcinogen and stings like hell if you get it on you). Sanding doesn't even hold a candle. Too much labor, too much dust.
This method does NOT work on metal, however; the metal conducts heat too rapidly. 6/26/2006 1:00:59 PM |

does the heat gun work on helping to remove stains? 6/26/2006 1:17:12 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Oh no. For that, you must clean with some sort of chemical or sand it out. 6/26/2006 2:33:08 PM |

Why even coat teak? Can't you just apply some teak oil every year and keep the natural finish? 6/26/2006 2:34:15 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Oh, you'll apply it more often than once a year.
This boat stays in the water all year round. Coating it as such lets me avoid re-oiling it every three or four months.
Sure, the natural finish looks great...but it's even more work to maintain. I'd rather do an initial thorough finish job and maybe apply one maintenance coat a year.
Lots of folks just let it go gray...but I don't like that myself. 6/26/2006 2:39:27 PM |
