Former Wolfpack basketball great Dick Dickey died yesterday:

Former N.C. State basketball player Dick Dickey died Monday in Indianapolis of complications from lung surgery. He was 79.
Dickey played forward for the Wolfpack from 1947-50, but his legacy reached to today's team because he was instrumental in bringing in guard Monte Towe, now an assistant coach, to the Pack.
"He was a loyal alumnus for the N.C. State basketball program," said Lou Pucillo, who played for State from 1957-59.
Wolfpack coach Everett Case met Dickey while both served in the Navy as World War II ended and lured Dickey to play for State as part of Case's famed "Hoosier Hotshots." Case recruited heavily from Indiana, hence the nickname.
The Wolfpack was a four-time Southern Conference winner during Dickey's career.
Pucillo never saw Dickey in person but has seen every game he ever played on film and remembers him as a "very excellent defensive player, penetrator, scorer."
Dickey's one-handed jump shot was one of his signature moves. He averaged 13.4 points during his career and earned All-America honors three times.
"He was gregarious," NCSU senior associate athletics director Frank Weedon said. "He was a good person to be around. He was friendly, outgoing."
Years after his college career ended, Dickey helped former teammate and Pack coach Norm Sloan with the occasional recruit. On the subject of Towe, he was adamant that Sloan take Towe, regardless of his smaller size.
The story is well known in the Pack basketball fraternity. Pucillo said Dickey gave an ultimatum, "You'd better take him or never ask me again." Sloan took Towe, and the point guard went on to lead State to its first NCAA title in 1974.
Dickey is survived by his wife, Jean, and seven children. The family has requested that memorials be made in his memory to the Indianapolis chapter of the American Lung Association. " |

RIP Dick Dickey.
While we're on the subject of good "dick" names, how about Dick Pole, used to be the Reds pitching coach. 7/6/2006 7:48:44 PM |
