I'm looking for a device that will allow me to read pdf eBooks. I know most PDAs can, but when the PDF has considerable graphics and formatting etc, how does the PDA interpret that ? Is it clear to read ?

Any recommendations are welcome !

I tried it with Acrobat once and it works, but it reads page numbers and footnotes like they're part of the text.

check out some of these:

Let me know if you have any luck, I'm curious about this myself.

I'm actually looking for a hardware device. Something like the Rocket eBook reader.

As silly as it may sound, I actually use my PSP to read ebooks sometimes. There's quite a few programs out there that display/convert ebooks to the PSP. Plus there's the whole games/mp3/movie aspect as well, that I'd imagine would be impossible to duplicate on dedicated ebook specific hardware.

Not the answer you were looking for, I'd expect, but it's something to think about.

dont waste your money on any of the first gen readers, wait it out till next year, they will cost half as much and be much more feature rich.

there really arent any carry-along alternatives at the moment

I agree. It seems the market responds well when people show interest - witness the iPod.

However whatever has come out in the market like the RCA eBook reader etc has been woefully problematic as far as price, proprietary formats yadda yadda.

I think the few people who do need eBooks use their PDAs.

Where's the flat foldable e-paper we were promised ?

its coming. the under 500 dollar ebook of the promised land is still another two years out. But the technology is finally manufacturable and the chipsets are there. It's the home stretch.

I wonder whether convergence is harming the development of the ebook reader. Now you have Mp3 players that show video, morph into cellphones and also do PDF. Something that stands alone doesn't have value any more methinks.
