Um...not true. What happened was this old lady had donated a large amount of land to the university many years ago. The catch was that she would only give it to the university provided they never fielded a football team while she was alive. Apparently a family member of hers died while playing the sport. She thought it was a brutal sport and didn't want any of the students to die from the sport as well. She died a couple of years ago and the talks of niner football, while big even while she was still alive, gained a lot of momentum after her death. I remember sitting at the dinner table with my entire family discussing it after someone brought up that she died. I was quoted as saying something like, "While I never wish death on anyone, this will be better for UNCC overall." That got a few shocked looks and groans my way, to which I replied in a semi-serious tone with, "Hey, sometimes people have to die for others to prosper," which got a big laugh out of everyone. 7/10/2006 5:22:58 PM |

From what I hear there are a couple fraternities there that make good money off selling "Charlotte 49er Football - Never Defeated" T-shirts.
The area where their track is at on campus (right next to the basketball arena) can easily be converted to a I-AA football field. And that would be about the distance from Bragaw to the Atrium for students from the student dorms.

i think the determining factor will be money (the demanders have already started pledging money and season tickets, so they are taking steps in the right direction)
the university will have to acquire some serious cash to build a stadium, hire a coach, and set up the rest of the facilities 7/11/2006 1:10:28 PM |

they should just hire the coach Independence HS had that took them to their present string of success. guy seemed like a master tactitian, and if they played Div-IAA for a few years it would allow him to get adjusted to the college game, before they make the jump to I-A. they could get him pretty cheaply, which would help them save money, besides he'd have built in recruiting ties at Indepence HS and the Charlotte Metro Area.7/11/2006 11:34:15 PM |

thomasville high school football 2 championships in 2 years. I think 3 in 5 years. 2 back to back women's basketball championships the past 2 years. 3 in the last 4 years and 4 men's basketball championships in the last 6 years or something like that...who cares if we are 1-A..we can take anyone.
ps. just won our first soccer championship this past year as well.

you are very very wrong my good man. 1. Asheboro is probably the only school in asheboro. thomasville has thomasville high which is 1-AA, East davison is 2-A and ledford is 3-A. thomasville high being the most urban.
2. Tville as produced some D-1 players. Brandon Setzer is the latest, but in the past we have had Anthony Anderson(Carolina), Kerry Mock(Dallas Cowboys for a couple of years) Perez Boulaware(Carolina), Lamont Pegues(Clemson), Josh Cockman(Airforce Academey), Andre Cannon ( UNC/ECU/UNC-Central - shrine bowl), Nick Means could have played D-1, as well as Todd McComb(went to Catawba set records there and tried out for a few NFL teams, but now he's coaching i think), Terrance Baxter(my cousin, one of the best players at Pfieffer in basketball...was invited to try out for the Utah Jazz and other teams, played over seas for a couple of years). we've had a few girls play D-1 basketball, but that doesn't count becuase it was about 10 years ago..the list goes on. Also most of our bball players play AAU ball with many highly talented recruits, for example..my brother played on the same team as Chris Paul, reshawn terry, PJ tucker and others for Kappa Magic and got significant playing time. As a matter of fact. The UNC football coaches used to visit Tville frequently. We have had tons of D-1AA and smaller schools to take athletes every single year. But on the flip side, that has been the biggest concern of thomasville athletes. We have tons of championships and great athletes, but our Athletic Directors has been terrible for years. All they really care about is winning championships for the HS and they could care less what happens after that. Unlike East Davidson and Ledford, who constantly have players playing D-1, becuase their coaches encourage them to take that next step to the next level and work hard to get them to do so. So in conclusion Brandon Setzer is no where near the Best all time player at tville. Yeah he got a scholarship to State and now plays for ECU, but there are WAY better players than him in the past.
For the record upcoming senior Quan Warley led the state in rushing yards last season and was the starter for the shrine bowl.7/13/2006 11:45:56 AM |

Kendra Rutledge and Erin Crowder play for Pfeiffer now. I know more about your school than you think.
Im not being racist here but the reason Tville is 1-A is because all the black people go there and all the white people go to East Davidson, thus the reason that Tville is good at sports like football and basketball. That is also the reason they suck at baseball and wrestling.7/13/2006 1:49:12 PM |

listen everybody, UNCC can't field a football team right now because the market, Charlotte, can't support another team. They've looked at the numbers, from what i understand, and they just don't add up yet, even with all this "alumni support"
Charlotte hasn't even proven that it can *financially* support two pro teams yet, plus they have minor league baseball and hockey there too. The entire decision is based on money, and there's not enough corporate/alumni support for UNCC to be able to pay for a team yet (85 schollies for the men, plus 85 for equivalent number of women, right?) 7/13/2006 2:50:47 PM |
DonMega Save TWW 4201 Posts user info edit post |
1. the people that go to nc state games aren't all from raleigh, so charlotte as a city does not need to support the football program as long as there is enough alumni support 2. the number of pro teams in the area doesn't affect who goes to the football games. when was the last time that you decided not to go to a wolfpack game because the hurricanes, bulls, tarheels, dukies, or whoever played? 3. the whole point of posting the links from above is to show that more and more alumni are already pledging money for a football program. Apparently there are a lot of charlotte alumni in the charlotte area, and they want a football team. 7/13/2006 2:59:43 PM |

^ i don't think it works that way
i think title IX does quality to quality, not quantity to quantity (if they build a nice football stadium, they couldn't have the girls play soccer on some dirt track at a middle school) 7/13/2006 3:18:50 PM |
jdman the Dr is in 3848 Posts user info edit post |
how much money do you think they need to start a football program? their alumni can't provide that much money and there's not enough corporate money in the town either.
from what I understand about their situation, that's whats keeping them out of football. Of course the alumni want it....but thats not enough...
and btw, to clarify title IX, this is from a dept of education report from 1997:
Quote : | "Title IX: Student Participation in Athletics
In the assessment of the "interests and abilities" portion of the Title IX regulations, a three part test governs. As the name suggests, this test consists of three separate and distinct parts. All that is required under Title IX is that an institution be in compliance with one part of that test. No one part of the test is the predominant or "true" measure of compliance. The three parts of the test are:
Part One: Substantial Proportionality. This part of the test is satisfied when participation opportunities for men and women are "substantially proportionate" to their respective undergraduate enrollments. Part Two: History and Continuing Practice. This part of the test is satisfied when an institution has a history and continuing practice of program expansion that is responsive to the developing interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex (typically female). Part Three: Effectively Accommodating Interests and Abilities. This part of the test is satisfied when an institution is meeting the interests and abilities of its female students even where there are disproportionately fewer females than males participating in sports.
