When I was 9, my friend Ally and I made "drinks" out of selzter water and strawberries and pretended we ran a bar called Moe's and listened to Hootie & The Blowfish. She was the bartender and dated Hootie. She also had a steep driveway at the top of a hill in the middle of a cul-de-sac. We would sit in her wagon and have someone push us down it and we'd go down it really fast, cross the cul-de-sac and finally lose steam across the street by a vacant lot, while listening to "Rollercoaster of Love".

no joke...i had a school. the attic in my house i kind of fixed up as a club house, which looked pretty damn cool. (it would evolve as i got older when i went through my wiccan phase) well...we'd have club meetings (we being me and the three other kids on my street). and in the club meetings we'd do various things from putting on plays and inviting the neighbors (or attempting to), setting up our lemonade stands which would fund our budget for said plays, create time capsules, and the big kicker was that we had a school section. i was the teacher. i gave out assignments. you had to read a book and then come back the next meeting and discuss the book. i even gave out grades.

we made a club out in the woods by cutting down weeds and small trees and nailing up boards to make like a bunker... then some other kids tried to get in there and mess it up and we beat their ass and threw them in the 5 foot deep ditch on the back side of our club

so many stupid things, and I wouldnt trade any of them

me and my friends would go out on fri. and sat. nights with DOT road cones and block off random roads. when cars would stop @ them to turn around we would barrage them with water balloons/firecrackers from the woods on the side of the road. pretty stupid, but i have to admit it was fun @ the time.

Also we would go cart slinging. @ night we would go to a store with a large parking lot, and find carts that hadn't been put away. the passenger in the car would hold on to the cart, and we would get up to about 20-30 mph (any faster and the cart would wobble too much to hold on to). the goal is to aim for one of the parking blocks, or a curb....when the cart hit, it would go about 6 ft up and launch about 25 ft out.

good times.

"Lava Lava Land" which was some game we came up with that involved not touching the ground, wizards, princesses, peasants, and evil monsters. We would also harvest sour grass for the winter since it only grew during the summer months.

My friends and I would treat our bikes like they were horses, and would 'groom and tuck them in for the night' every night after we were done roaming the neighborhood.

We would roll down hills on those roller scooter things and line up trashcans and run into them.

We had a creek and we'd build forts, then set things on fire then float them down the creek.

One Christmas when I was 7, I got my first set of tools. It had a saw included. That week, I used the saw to cut down my mother's favorite decorative tree in the garden. What? It was small, easy to cut, and I needed to see if the saw worked! (Got caught and spanked)

When I was 10, I found a package of waterproof matches in my parent's camping stuff. The idea of matches that would light when wet was intriuging. I wet several matches with hose water, then lit them one at a time...still marveling at how WET matches could make fire! I failed to notice that I was dropping the lit matches into pinestraw. I went off to play with friends, and when I returned, the backyard was on fire. Oops...my bad! (Got caught and grounded)

Around that same age I was checking out a construction site in my neighborhood where they had just laid the foundations. They were building a basement, so the foundation was down in this big hole. I couldn't tell if the cement was wet or not, so I threw a dirt clod at it. It was indeed wet, and the dirt clod made a satisfying PLOP when it contacted and sunk into the freshly poured concrete. So satisfying that I had to do it again...and again...and again. Did I know this would destroy the foundation so that they'd have to dig it up and re-pour it at the cost of thousands of dollars? Of course not! (Never caught)

When I was 12 I formed a club that was really had no other purpose than to make the younger kids in the neighborhood do stupid things in order to get into my "club". All of them had to be my slaves for a day. They brought me drinks and snacks that my mom didn't have at my house, which was awesome. One had to eat a bug. The other had to eat leaves. I also I made another kid eat some mold. I'm not sure if they ever got sick. (Never caught)

Around 13 we had this pompus rich guy move in across the street from us. He pissed me off, quite frankly I can't even remember how it was he pissed me off, he just did. Right after he moved in I placed nails under his tires and when he backed up he got punctures in three of them. He went around the neighborhood asking if we had any idea who did it. I told him I had no idea, and in fact, I would help him look for whoever did it. So I pretended to play detective and canvassed three whole neighborhoods asking people if they knew anything. Of course they didn't...but I think the neighboor still suspects me to this day. (Never caught)

When I was about 15, I used a fake AIM account to talk to this kid who lived down the street from me. We were best friends when I moved into the hood and hung out at school since I was new. But I he never played sports or anything so I ended up being friends with some kids I met through basketball and lacrosse. Through this AIM convo, He revealed to me that at one point he wanted to commit suicide when I stopped being his friend and thought he life was ruined because I ditched him for cooler kids.

when I was 7 I was riding on my bike and decided to make up a game called "ride as fast as you can down the driveway and stop before the stairs"

our driveway is VERY steep and at the bottom next to the garage are brick stairs leading down to the basement entrance

lets just say I was the first and only one to play that game, and it ended with a sprained wrist, a broken nose, mutliple scrapes, and a trashed bike

we used to navigate the storm drains on sunny days using a flashlight. one was near my house and another was near my friends. quite the adventure and we even did it without light once.

ambushed the ice cream man with waterguns.

played full-neighborhood hide and seek games. cant beleive nobody ever got mad at us for wandering in their yards or whatever.

wagon racing down the hill with a trashbag as a parachute-stop worked wonders as well.

I used to go to our yard and cut daffodils to put inside. The stems always drip this clear liquid when cut.

One day I decided to taste it. Big mistake.

I had an infatuation with ants. When I was young, in my backyard we always had these huge ant hills. I loved to watch them get mad and all come out of the hill, so I would take a baseball bat and attack the hills with it. Then I would stand there, transfixed by the sight. I wouldn't realize that the ants were on me until they were all the way up my leg and biting. My mom would have to hose me off to get them off of me.

when i was 9 my two cousins and i had a street hockey puck, but not sticks, so we thought it would be a good idea to use some bent rebar that was around for some reason

well i shouldnt have been standing directly behind one of them when he went for a slap shot.

knocked unconscious and 8 stitches later i had a killer headache for like 3 days.

we also used to get one of the cousins to put a pillow down his shirt and a laundry basket on his head and we threw baseballs at him in his room.

oh wow so many.... being an only child makes you get creative

i would play office- no joke- i had a play phone and i had my friends mom give me some fax cover sheets and order forms and stuff i would pretend to fill out

my friends and i came up with "recitals" we would perform on our roller blades like we were ice skaters in the cul-de-sacs

the same friends and i also turned our vhs & book collections into a "library" and we had a catalog & we could borrow stuff from each other but if you returned it late there was a fee-- i dont think we ever charged someone though...

my step sister and i would put on performances during the summer when i went to my dads. we would make posters and hang them around the house the week beforehand

one time we got my step brother involved in our jungle book themed performance and we made him act like a snake in the baby pool-- i want to say he was like 16 at the time-- i dont know HOW we got him to agree to that shit

we also took rocks out of peoples yards and tried to sell them back to them

classic lemonade stand of course

and we also tried to turn our large circular cement patio out back into a roller skating rink. we would play music on the boom box & charge 25 cents to get in

thats all that really comes to mind at the moment

^you were a good kid...damn you make the shit I did look like felonies...

I remembered another one

- my parents bought me a pink golf cart for Christmas one year and my cousin and I would take it in the woods and ram in into trees...one day we got brave and rammed my mom's car...(big mistake) we also attempted to run over people on several occassions...got that thing take away pretty quick after the car and people running over incidents...

My big thing was fireworks and bombs and whatnot.

I remember I had a friend who had some REAL M80s. We blew a cinderblock to pieces with one.

I used to try EVERYTHING to make my own firecrackers and bombs. I took a model rocket engine and pulverized the solid propellant inside and put it back in a section of the engine's tube and sealed the ends with wax. It blew up alright. But the tube was so thick that the results were a deep, muffled boom without a whole lotta loudness.

Mom came running outta the house asking me what the hell was I doing.

I must have burned half the grass in the far corner of the back yard, shooting at beer cans full of gasoline (with a rag crammed in the top and lit) with my BB gun.

Flying around corners on my friend's go-kart...sliding sideways, the back tire caught and me and the go-kart flipped over HARD. I remember opening my eyes, staring at the engine right in my face, still idling.

Here's a few others I just thought of:

-played Oregon Trail in a friend's tall swingset-playhouse thing. We mushed up holly berries from the bush and pretended it was food
-Picked flowers off of neighbor's plants and stepped on them
-went to the first ever Lillith Faire...with my friend's Southern Baptist Grandmother as our chaperone. The lesbians and pot smoking didn't go over well.
-jumping on a huge trampoline listening to Britney Spears, Spice Girls, NSync, Backstreet Boys and of course, Blur's "Song 2"
-having the first boy-girl birthday party among my friends
- thinking the Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight" music video was the greatest thing I had ever seen...and thinking Billy Corgan had cancer because he was bald
-buying my first cd - Mariah Carey's Daydream
- Throwing erasers at this girl I hated in 6th Gradeand getting called to the principal's office...worried as shit, only to be asked if I had overheard another student's plans to bring a gun to school and shoot a teacher (no joke...6th grade.)
- being 12 and thinking guys in highschool thought my friends and I were hot when we went to the movies on Friday nights

or..

soaking tennis balls in gasoline, lighting them on fire and kicking them down the street at other kids.

loads of fun until the metal gas can spout caught on fire inside my friend's garage. somehow we got it put out. dont know how we didnt blow ourselves up.

...

so many things to choose. i did a lot of dumb shit.

ZXAPPEAL: i think we had similar childhoods. molotov cocktails, gasoline bombs, gun powder and fireworks. fun stuff.

one time we got a neighbor's acetylene tank (he was a welder) and filled a 5-gallon plastic bucket upside down with acetylene gas. used a sparkler as a fuse, and when that gas ignited, the bucket shot up about 200 feet straight in the air and the boom rattled windows on the other side of the neighborhood half a mile away.

needless to say, the cops became involved. luckily the neighbor knew the cops and said it was him. gave him a warning.

Haha, I always liked fire, but I always had enough respect for it not to do stuff like that.

I'm sure i've done more dumb stuff, but the one that comes to mind is shorting the exposed plug of a fan out with a nail clipper (sliding it in with some small piece of wood), which made a nice spark and tripped a breaker.

my dad use to travel a lot when i was young (guessing 4 yrs old), i would pick up the phone and randomly press buttons until someone picked up and i would ask if they were my dad. probably freaked out some people.

threatened to kick a teacher in the face in first grade when she asked me to get out of a tree. That got me sent to sister mary jean's office (the principal at the catholic school i went to in 1st and 2nd grade)

i tried to do a 360 on my bmx bike when i was 7 or 8. that got me a mild concusion and scarred elbows for life after i went over the handle bars.

according to my mom i threw rocks at cars with a friend when i was 9.

my fire phase where i would set stuff on um fire. memorable moments include: poking the biggest ant hill ever with a screw driver then filling it with an entire canister of lighter fluid then watching as flames shot out of all the holes. having a friend poor gas straight onto a fire which eventually curled their vinyl siding before we could hose it down. melting a taco bell plastic toy to the pavement in a sacrifice to the gods while it was pouring rain.

my water balloon phase in high school. middle schoolers beware.

and my two botched attempts at making a molotov cocktails in high school.

there are dozens maybe hundreds of other stupid shit i did when i was a kid.

you know, just reading these narratives, you can immediately sort out the girls from the boys. girls are all about social events, make believe, drama, etc.. boys want to blow shit up, break things, jump bikes off cliffs, and beat other kids up.

except for TheTabbyCat... i think she mighta kicked a few of the boys' asses.
