Curious to see what is out there that I might have missed. I'll go ahead and say Crimson Editor which is a nice little text editor most people know about but its got some decent features

Open Office
Open source office suite compatible with MS Office formats and allows you to work on MS Office files interchangeably without losing formatting. The sub programs are near exact copies so the interface is familiar. It even allows you to export files to PDF formats, which is much more attractive to send in papers and resumes. I don't even want to use Office now. Free versions for Windows, Linux and Solaris.

eclipse is a bloated, irritating piece of shit a lot of the time. I like crimson and textpad.

those are about the only free tools I use in windows, everything else I use in *nix or pay for
