Im moving a 55" Mistubishi TV, and my friend said I could borrow his Suburban. The problem is that I know the TV wont stand up straight in there; I would have to lay it down. Will it get damaged sitting in that position? assuming it's on blankets and all that? Or will I have to get a truck so it can be transported upright? 7/15/2006 9:13:52 AM |

The internal components are reinforced such that they'll be stable when moved if the unit is upright. If you flip it on top of the screen or on it's back, there's a good chance (especially with our shitty roads) that something will get fucked up. I ran in to this issue moving a Sony 55" TV a few months ago, and it wouldn't fit upright in my 4runner. I called Sony and this is what they told me.
So i ended up having to borrow a truck. 7/15/2006 9:23:02 AM |

my roommate and i moved his 52" (?) tv from charlotte in his truck. we put a mattress down in the bed of the truck and the tv on top (face down) and tied it up. it survived. 7/15/2006 11:16:01 AM |

It's more likely to get messed up being moved on its side than upright, but it should still be fine. 7/15/2006 11:54:47 AM |

i helped a friend move a 55" plasma tv in my jeep - it wouldn't sit upright so we laid it flat. i remember hearing that laying a plasma on its side is a horrible thing to do, but we didn't have time to get a bigger vehicle or a truck, so we chanced it. when we hooked it up, it was fine. 7/15/2006 12:00:38 PM |

Plasma and LCD tv's are probably the safest to move like that. DLP's would probably be the most chancy (as they actually have a moving part or two.) 7/15/2006 12:06:23 PM |

You're pretty much promised to mess it up if it is a CRT Projection and you lay it down.
Just grab a box truck from lowes for the day or find someone with a pickup truck.
^When I bought my DLP from Tweeter they loaded it in the back of my Matrix and said that it won't hurt the tv one bit to be laid down on its side.

And people at retail stores never lie right? I'm not saying moving it like that WILL hurt it, or even probably would, just be careful of speedbumps when you've got the thing on it's side. 7/15/2006 12:09:05 PM |

Oh I took what they said with a grain of salt and wrapped it up in a ton of padding and drove the entire 2 miles very, very slowly and carefully. 7/15/2006 12:12:43 PM |

I'm pretty sure the people at Tweeter know what the fuck they're talking about 7/15/2006 12:20:33 PM |

They were going to deliver it for free to me but couldn't do it until the next day. The sales guy saw my car and told me if I wanted to lay it down in the back I could take it that day. I told him that I had purchased a CRT projection before and that they said it would mess it up pretty bad if I laid it down while transporting it and he replied back by telling me that with the DLP projection unit's it really doesn't matter how they get transported.
I guess since DLP uses a color wheel instead of having 3 different lights converge it makes it less bitchy about being laid down. 7/15/2006 12:24:23 PM |

^^I'm sure they know plenty about the products as far as use and quality of image/sound go. To assume they know enough about the manufacture of the products to know exactly how they'll hold up when being moved in a way counter-indicated by the manufacturer is just naivety though. To assume they won't understate the risk of you hauling something home yourself sideways just to close the sale and get that commision is also naive.
^Probably, but I wouldn't have wanted to hit a pothole with that thing in my car. Heh, and obviously you were still somewhat concerned right?

Absolutely. I drove very slow and carefully while I had a buddy of mine make sure the TV wasn't moving around much. I have to move it again very soon when I move into my new house and I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with it. I'm still concerned about moving it.
More than likely it will get the same treatment though. Wrapped up in a king size comforter and put in the back of the Matrix. 7/15/2006 12:31:59 PM |

Hah, I had a friend who was so daunted by the idea of moving his home entertainment system and huge tv that when he moved out of his old place he sold all his electronics to the new tenent and bought new stuff. Thats just extremely lazy though. 7/15/2006 6:09:08 PM |
