A US invasion would have cost as many as ten million Japanese lives and close to one million allied lives. The simple fact is that the US could and already had destroyed Japanese cities using conventional bombs to no avail. The fact that they used a single bomb to cause similar damage was a more effective and fearsome way to push the Japanese to surrender.
