Makes you wonder how genius it is to sign your first round pick before the draft if you have that option. I think the Texans were afraid of this exact scenario, and also decided that they needed more help on the lines than in the backfield. Brings up the Eli Manning issue of, "Do players have rights such as choosing their first team?"

The Saints are fucking idiots.
Like Sports Guy said, there should be a clause that allows for fans to occasionally cheer against their team. I'm taking my voucher.
Fucking wasted 2nd pick, wasted draft, wasted expectations, wasted history, wasted franchise.
Gotdamned situational multi-position players are NOT worth top pick status. This cat won't be full-time anywhere on the field. This is absurd, but unfortunately is a mere byproduct of the ESPN Reginald Lovefest. He feels entitled to more than he's worth, more than the man who was picked before him, more than any rookie has ever earned on an initial contract.
Saints brass went bad on their promise to fill a team need with the second overall pick and now have egg in the face for it. Dumb fuckers.

What team is gonna risk drafting him high the next year when he's done this already? I'm sure somebody will draft him, but not at #2.
He hasn't done jack yet and expects to get paid.
Ha. There's a glut of RB's in the NFL, most of whom have short careers. And he won't even be an every-down back.

I had a feeling Reggie Bush would be ask for a lot of money with all of the hype surrounding him. He shouldn't ask for more money than Mario got, and the Saints shouldn't pay him more.
I think part of the reason Reggie is demanding such a high price tag, is because his value is so high and if he has a bad season or loses his "Superman" image, then he'll have a hard time getting a huge deal later.
The Texans must have known about this, a really good move on their part. 7/23/2006 12:18:55 AM |

And Phillip Rivers didnt try to get a ridiculous amount of money. He tried to get a fair contract, and settled for less overall money when he finally signed his contract so he wouldnt have to win like 34 superbowls to get it all. if bush really does want more money than mario, that is his fault, and he should be ridiculed....no agent should feel that his/her client has enough leverage to circumvent the system, draft order should = cash order

You guys have some really selective memories.
Quote : | "no agent should feel that his/her client has enough leverage to circumvent the system, draft order should = cash order" |
This was precisely the case in the Philip Rivers situation. He was offered ~$39 million but was holding out for Eli Manning money (~$45 million). He said that since he was TRADED for Eli (not even close to straight up mind you) that he should be paid like the #1 pick.
He was then offered $40.5 million and again turned it down. A week or two later he settled for the $40.5 million.
The "incentives" you are referring to were badly skewed by NC State fans who were trying to defend River's ridiculous position.
He was holding out for Eli money and the Chargers said "fine, meet these incentives and we'll give you better than Eli money". It was their way of saying "go fuck yourself you greedy bastard".
Philip Rivers did the same illogical thing that Reggie Bush is doing. The difference is that Reggie Bush is way more of a known quantity than Philip was.
If you weren't bashing Rivers two years ago, please keep silent on the Bush affair.

You gotta keep in mind that it's not the players that say these things, it's the agents. Rivers never said, "I deserve to be paid as much as Eli", his agent did. Same with Bush and whoever this guy is who is hinting that he might hold out all year. These are typical negotiation ploys designed to get a team to fork up more cash.
Now if Bush actually makes good on his agent's threat, despite the Saints offering him a great deal, then you gotta ask if you can trust the guy and just how special he THINKS he is. 7/23/2006 3:07:56 PM |

the chargers are a notoriously cheap organization, LT held out, and they have had plenty of other contract issues over the years. you have no idea when the time frame of those incentives were, you are just making that up to serve your point. from all that i can ascertain, those were the incentives that were offered from day 1 of the negotiations, i read about them before rivers even missed a regular season game
anyways, all of these situations are different, to just say that you think philip demanded "eli money or else" and we need to hate him equally is just fucking stupid without looking at all of the other circumstances

Reginald wants MORE money than Mario Williams. Despite being the 2nd pick. Because he FEELS he was SUPPOSED to go first. Wannabe privileged ass muhfucka. That's like if Matt Leinart were to say "I should have gone 3rd, so pay me like the 3rd overall pick"
He has already
- lost out on being the top pick overall, due to his ridiculous demands - lost out on getting the NFL to change their rules, so he can wear number 5 - stated that he would only donate to hurricane relief if he got to wear 5 - ^ backpedaled on that stipulation after it appeared that the NFL would not change the rule - been rumored as saying that he doesn't wanna play for the Saints
and now this.
pretty soon he will find that he won't dominate the league as much as expected, whether it's this year or next year. he'll find that NFL defenses are 20x better than the shit he faced in the wac-10. 7/23/2006 11:33:26 PM |

I just did this like 6 months ago on here.
It's a known fact that Rivers was offered the deal he signed about two weeks before he finally agreed to it.
The "crazy incentives" didnt come into play until Rivers repeatedly turned down $39 million and held out for Eli's contract.
It was the CHargers way of saying there is no fucking way we're giving you Eli money.
The whole thing played out on this message board 2 years ago and i documented it all again ~6 months ago when someone started this same fight.
State fans just have a selective memory when it comes to the Golden Boy. 90% of them don't even remember that he had a relatively bad Sophomore season and a lackluster junior season. His freshman season was awesome as was his senior year (minus his gloryhog attempt that cost us the OSU game of course) but the two in between were definitely short of spectacular.
