Colin Cowherd of ESPN radio was giving love to Chucky. He said there isn't really a reason Amato should be on the hot seat. He went on to say that NC State is an average college football program, at best. I tend to agree.

Amato has raised the national prominence of the program, has recruited big league talent, and has reached a bowl game every year except one. His record in the ACC is the biggest knock against him, but with big wins against some of the power programs, some of that can be forgiven and, frankly, is not bad for our program.

So is Chuck Amato really on the hot seat this season and why?

if he goes 6-6 or 7-5 then no

but if he goes like 3-9 then yes

the fact that we played well during the 2nd half of last season helped him out

and honestly a lot of it will probably come down to the UNC game

I personally don't believe that he is on the hot seat with the media, but rather on the hot seat with the students and alumni.

NC State students/alumni have a trend of having high expectations, both in the classroom and on the field, and it's just an extension with the current situation.

As a whole, I don't think that NC State community is mad at what Chuck has been doing for the program, but rather what he hasn't been doing with the stuff he has been doing. For example, you have the #8 offense in the country a few years and can't win the big games. Then you have the #1 defense the next few years, but can't win against UNC, but beat FSU and play competitively against Miami, a team that was #3 the year we played them. Also, getting together the money for a media press tower, facilities, bowl expansion, and jumbotron, but having the worst penalized team in the league, I could go on....

So when you balance those things, we do indded have an average college football program.

"We always seem to get the big fish, but we train them as if they're swimming in a little pond..."

There is much more smoke than fire here. It seems to me that for whatever reason the media has worked up a storm about Amato being on the hotseat, without much provocation from the university, fans, or donors.

While Amato certainly has something to prove, without a particularly successful season without Philip Rivers, he is by no means under any ultimatum or in serious jeopardy.

I hope we can win at least 8 games or so in the regular season to put some of this behind him. 5 wins is probably plenty to keep his job another year. 4 wins or less with a loss to UNC and he is in serious trouble, but it is hard to call this situation a hotter seat than many other coaches around the country are on every year.

the UNC biased media likes to talk shit about him too

the same retards that still don't know the reason Amato wore the red Adidas kicks was to pay tribute to the defense that the bball team played

I don't really get the feeling that chuck is on the hot seat from students. Most kids i know like him and his whole character. yeah ive heard he isnt the best game-day coach... but he does well(still needs to step up against unc). His recruiting is the biggest thing as he seems to do well with it year in/year out. I really wish we would lay off of our coaches a little bit. We ran off Herb, and we do not need to do the same for Amato... especially after what he has done for our program. He has built up expectations which is good, now we just need to give him some time to come through on some promises without having him under a magnifying glass. i have a good feeling about this season.

we get media attn when we get a #1 draft pick. unfortunately we're predicted to be a bottom feeder in the acc this year, so that's the specific story that came after the nfl draft story wore off.

this might be true, but our expectations and would make us happy are different

i would be happy if chuck could get 7-8 wins each year w/ a slightly better or worse season every now and then.

oh

in this case, it was "the media" PRAISING Amato, not bashing him

"the media" is the one saying that he is not on the hotseat, and shouldn't be

I don't think he should be, we wouldn't be where we are (which is maybe the 6th or 7th best team in the ACC) if it wasn't for Chuck

We'd be worse off without Chuck, and if we dump him, we'd be the last place team in the league

NC State fans are sheltered.

Many of them don't understand that NC State is a very, middle-of-the road program in football. I'd say we are a program on the rise, but we don't even compare to some of the upper-middle programs.

i agree with that completely

but if we are a middle of the road program

why is a coach supposedly on a hotseat after a 7-5 season?

Why did Herb leave after 5 straight NCAA appearances?

Unrealistic expectations from fans.

true but in all fairness, our bball program has a couple titles...granted the most recent is 23 years ago

there are only 10-20 programs in the country with multiple titles

in football we dont have the prestige...theoretically we should have higher expectations in bball than football

^I vaguely remember us being on like the 5 yard line and not even scoring so much as a field goal because of poor clock management.

EDIT: Now I remember
We got tackled inbounds and the carolina guys pretty much sat on our guy and wouldn't get off of him so they could run the clock out. We couldn't get back to the line of scrimmage.

also one thing Amato ALWAYS had over Herb regardless of records, success, etc:

Amato went to State and played football for State...Herb never went to State

I first heard (and believed) this probably 4 years ago. I no longer believe it, at all.

I don't think there's anything wrong with me say I'm disappointed in Amato and that he needs to get his ass in gear. Penalities were a huge problem for us 2 years ago. And nothing changed for 2005, still a huge problem.

And how the fuck did we have as crappy a team as we did last year while having 4 first round picks, holy cow man...

^^^We certainly had penalty problems early in the year, but improved on them the second half of the season and finished around the middle of the conference in penalty yards per game. Get your facts straight.

Cowherd may be saying Amato shouldn't be on the hot seat, but it is other clowns in the media perpetuating the idea that he is on the hotseat. I didn't hear Cowherd, but it sounds like he is responding to "fans" rather than the media, thus perpetuating this false notion.

Also, Sendek's problem wasn't that he wasn't flamboyant. It is that he never "got" the culture of Wolfpack nation, the importance of rivalries, etc (which for all his faults Amato gets, Sheridan got, Jimmy V and Norm Sloan got, Sidney Lowe seems to get). In a big time sports program, particularly one with the passion and history around NC State basketball, a coach needs to "get it". It didn't help that his disdain for fans was pretty apparent.

No hes not on the hotseat...the media is just runnin with it because they want to. Losing to inferior teams like Wake,UNC, and sometimes GT/MD needs to be corrected. But Chuck isnt stupid, he knows we have underachieved and u better believe we will put up W's against wake and carolina this season.

isn't NCSU average in nearly everything we do? Nuclear Engineering is about the only thing we are noted for.

Get over it, we are an everyday run of the mill university that sometimes gets lucky in a game or two but will not amount to much until things really start to change and we embrace what we have.

yeah yeah yeah, I was aware that it improved towards the end of the season. But what kind of impression is it to go to the first game of the year and see all the same mistakes that plagued the previous year's team? Doesn't inspire confidence in your coach at all...

Absolutely. Keeping everything else constant, if chuck had better than a .500 record against UNC in his tenure, there would be no hot seat.

Of course there are still a minority of fans who think we're entitled to a national title, but i think the majority of fans would be placated with an ongoing domination of UNC.
