i'm not really looking for bikes they sell at wal-mart (unless someone who knows a lot about bikes reads this and knows of any particular models that are DECENT)...i'm not looking for anything high performance, but i ride it on a daily basis and i would prefer it be aluminum with something along the lines of shimano revoshift (twist-shifting) and suntour shocks...must have shocks (i do enough light trail riding that it makes a difference)

well, the last time i spent decent money on a bike, it got stolen, so i think i'll pretty low-end here...i don't do any heavy trails, and i take very good care of my equipment (the bike doesn't stay outside unless i'm in class), so it doesn't have to be super-rugged, either...for a used bike? $100 (i realize this won't get my anything spectacular, but that's the point right now)

heres your answer. all walmart bikes suck ass, due to the fact that they max out the shit suspension, cause more people want a bike that looks cool, rather than what performs well. its sad.
if manufactures would create a cheaper bike that actually had decent components, and didnt have suspension (seeing as how hardly any of those bikes see trails), it would be a much better buy. and instead of pedaling a inefficient squishy 50lb bike that falls apart, they could be riding a 30 pound bike that holds together. next time you go to walmart, look at the quality. there isnt any.

i would say go with a Trek 820 or a Specialized Hardrock Sport.
those are acutally good bikes that cost $260 New. so used you could get a good deal. AND if you find one, i would tune it up for you for a small fee... I've been a bike mechanic going on 2 years.

and as for the getting yuour bike stolen, thats your own fault IF you went with a tiny cable lock, less than 7mm thick or locked it to something cuttable or moveable... get a bigger lock. i would suggest a U-lock or a big chain lock. if they actually cut through the bike rack, i'm sorry for you.
