i have a HP desktop, and usually it runs perfectly. i had a virus in my system32 folder a while ago, but took care of that by finding out what it was on a different computer and deleting it on mine. well, now i have another virus, i think.

i'm connected to the internet via wireless, and it says i have a strong connection, but i can't access anything online. it was running fine one night, went to sleep, woke up, no more internet. i had a netgear adapter in my apt, and it worked here fine for a while, but then it stopped. i put my old one back in to see if that would help. it didn't. still no internet.

any suggestions besides reformating? i'm going to take it to geek squad tomorrow hah. should i uninstall the netgear adapter program first? omg what should i do.

boot into safe mode, run antivirus and spyware progs with updated definitions. if that doesnt work, download hijackthis and post the log file at http://www.hijackthis.de and remove the bad entries.

^^yes, that's how i feel. i want to stab my computer.

^tried the safe mode, it finds nothing. and i can't get updated definitions because i can't download anything because i can't get online.

Why don't you try and see if another comp can connect wirelessly?

For me, a lot of times I'll be connected to my router but my internet will stop working. Everything seems fine too. Ultimately I have to turn off the router and turn it back on again to get it to work. It might be that I've neglected to update the firmware on the thing.

But anyway you want to do at least a little bit of troubleshooting before dropping lots of cash to the geek squad. They cost way too much.

we have a laptop connected, too, and it connects just fine. we've tried reststarting the router. nothing works, can't get any updates, nothing.

get on a computer that has access to the internet, then download hijackthis and put it on the infected computer. generate a log then take that log and paste it onto the good computer so u can access http://www.hijackthis.de and find the infected entries. it's worth a shot..if no go then i say just reformat.

kinda already gave u a step by step.

download on good computer
install on bad computer
run on bad computer - "do a system scan and save logfile"
transfer log file to good computer
paste log file into http://www.hijackthis.de
click analyze on the webpage
scroll through the list and remove bad entries on bad computer

if this doesnt work, then i would say just reformat and get it over with.

ok. so i ran hijackthis, and printed off the list of things it said were bad. before i go and delete anything, is there anything on this list that SHOULDN'T be deleted?
