Why the fuck do they have to spread ridiculous inaccuracies resulting in the rest of us having to listen to idiots thinking that those things really do happen.
Example: The sweetass Ferrari F430 Spider in Miami Vice (just released) shoots blue flames out the exhaust pipes under hard acceleration.
Great, now every dumbfuck out there is gonna think that high end Italian sports cars shoot flames out the back

the general population is indeed pretty stupid but i think that most people that go to movies expect crap like this to be "movie magic"
although i can see your point - after independence day - people did think that if aliens came to attack us they might have shields around their enemy spacecraft that would be invulnerable to our attacks - but nobody really cared b/c we have will smith...7/31/2006 1:47:17 PM |

How about the "Fast and the Furious" series? Now every dumbass with $300 bucks thinks a primer grey body kit makes their car go faster. I also loved the "double clutch" thing. Yeah, make sure to double clutch your synchromesh gearbox when you are upshifting during a drag race. "tokyo drift" is gonna be great. 7/31/2006 3:56:39 PM |

How about tires squealing PERIOD. Whether accelerating, braking, or making a turn (especially at 10 mph).7/31/2006 4:29:08 PM |

tires can squeal at less than 10mph

tires squeal in parking decks from the high amount of pollution buildup. you know, semi enclosed space, high traffic, low direct rainfall.... 7/31/2006 4:54:24 PM |
Doc Rambo IV All American 7202 Posts user info edit post |
i always figured it was caused by the type of concrete used in the construction.

it's easy to squeal tires doing all those things (try drag racing or a lap at VIR), but not necessarily in normal street manuevers7/31/2006 5:20:21 PM |

my tires squeal at a bp gas station near my place, and it has a very smooth black surface. not trying to discredit your claim, but it only happens at this bp station! I think very smooth surfaces cuase it as well7/31/2006 5:25:40 PM |

I think xvang meant that movies/shows use an EXCESSIVE amount of tire-squealing sound effects
you can see extreme examples of this on World's Wildest Police Videos and such 7/31/2006 11:10:56 PM |

Haha, those police video shows are great. The acceleration sounds are added in, the tires squealing, sometimes even the police sirens.

Presence of stone/gravel makes tires squeal too.
I learned driving when I was 8 on a dirt track. Every now and then, I'd play with the brakes and the transmission to make the tires squeal like crazy.7/31/2006 11:23:54 PM |

did you miss the "high amount of pollution buildup" part? few parking lots on earth are more polluted than gas stations.

what about them? if your diff is locking in a parking deck then you need some additive i would think.7/31/2006 11:31:11 PM |

Exactly... we're not talking about real-life tracks and real-life racing here... the thread title says "Cars in movies". I'll admit that they do a lot better these days with the sound effects, but watch any good ole' movie/tv show and you'll know what I'm talking about.7/31/2006 11:47:40 PM |

I laughed my ass off with the Dukes of Hazzard movie. Not only would that nose heavy Charger land squarely on its front grill every time it launched into the air, it was a lot of fun watching all the cop cars chase the Charger in the race at the end (effectively being faster than all the "race" cars).

good to know that engineering degree is coming to good use, as gravity is independent of weight and all masses accelerate equally towards the center of the earth.

ahh i didn't put too much thought into car jumping previously
so if a car is going over a jump - the front wheel leaves the jump first - gravity starts slowing it down and then makes it fall - the back wheel is still getting pushed up by the ramp - so when the back wheel leaves the ramp, it is going up but the front wheel is going down and thus there is rotation 8/1/2006 3:17:56 PM |

^^^that doesn't really mean anything. Its not difficult to make flames shoot out your exhaust. All you need are some spark plugs and a combustible.
However, if flames are shooting out of a full length exhaust under full throttle, then the engine isn't running properly. 8/1/2006 8:15:05 PM |

the car is going to make a paraboloid path through the air, with a landing angle very close if not equal to the launching angle. for the car to do a nose dive and destroy itself it would have to launch at a 45+* angle.***

The reason that the shinny parking lots make tires squealing is the decorative sealant. The smooth surface helps, but it is the sealant that causes the squel. It does not really protect the asphalt but it looks pretty. 8/2/2006 6:43:49 PM |
