so I recently took a position where I have a substantial amount of control over the user base. I was web browsing while waiting for a meeting and found that Penny Arcade is blocked. After speaking with some people I found out that there is a lady down the hall who complains constantly if people are not doing their job. IE looking at web sites.
She's not a manager, she's a secretary and I guess she thinks everyone should suffer. Now in an effort to start good relations I find a reason to go visit her. As I walk around the corner I notice she's reading a cooking website. I laugh and head back without meeting with her and mention this to my collegues. I go ahead anf remove PA from the blocked list and not 10 minutes later she comes through the door complaining about how people are looking at comics and not working and wanted to know why Pa wasn't blocked.
Now i don't know about you but that seemed really odd to me how fast she reacted. It's like she bookmarked it just to be a stickler. Well my new position puts me in the lead of controlling that so I went "Okay" and immediately blocked it... along with ever single website she visited that didn't have to do with her job.
oooo I say MAYBE 2 minutes... had passed since I blocked those and comes storming in. "My internet isn't working".
I go "Really what seems to be the trouble?"
"I can't access any websites?" "Which sites?" "Any!" "How about your work related websites?"
You know how you can tell when someone goes through the 3 steps of shock? Suprise, horror, anger... yeah she went through that.
"that makes no sense. Why did you block those?" "You told me you didn't want people looking at non work related web sites so I limited everyones access in your department to just the Intranet" (Which wasn't true but I thought i could bluff this one).
She leaves and 5 minutes later I get a call from her boss asking me why I'm stopping her from doing her job. I explain what was going on and I about lost it when he said "Oh, i thought PA down" (It just gave them a permissions error, no reason why). He said to open them all up and oddly enough... PA is giving permissions errors today but that has nothing to do with me...
I wonder just how far this ladies reach goes...

Could you set something up that transfers all her non-work sites to a page that says something like "GET BACK TO WORK"? 8/3/2006 10:50:41 AM |

You can, but I just started here and I don't want to make TOO many enemies. I believe in allowing people freedom to roam the internet save non work safe sites. Oddly enough you couldn't view Pa, but you could "Porn.com". 8/3/2006 11:11:30 AM |

Damn, dude. You should be a motivational speaker or something. Absolutely inspiring.

well it seems now that PennyArcade is blocked at a high level than me (head office). I can't wait to bring this up at the meeting today. We do not have a policy of browsing the web since there has never been an issue of work not being completed on time. 8/10/2006 8:27:55 AM |
