The 400-horsepower Chevrolet Camaro concept generated buzz at the North American International Auto Show in January. (MANDI WRIGHT/Detroit Free Press) It's really happening: The Chevy Camaro is coming back as a production car, the Free Press has learned.
General Motors Corp. Chairman Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the resurrection of the legendary muscle car in a speech Thursday to an automotive conference in Traverse City.
The auto industry has been buzzing with speculation about GM's plans for the Camaro ever since the carmaker wowed the crowds at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January with a stunning 400-horsepower concept. At a time when truck and SUV sales are softening and car sales are regaining momentum, a sexy new entry could give GM's entire passenger-car line a boost.
The production version could be built as early as 2008 and will offer three engines, a V-6 and two V-8s, according to people familiar with the plans.
GM spokesman Steve Harris would not comment Friday on plans for the Camaro, but other sources told the Free Press that GM's top management and board of directors have green-lighted the car.
The Camaro was introduced in 1966 as the answer to the Ford Mustang, and it prowled America's streets and drag strips until production ended in 2002.
Like the concept, the production Camaro will be based on GM's new Zeta global architecture for rear-wheel-drive cars, expected to form the basis for several big, powerful sedans and coupes to be introduced over the next few years.
It was unclear last week where GM intends to build the Camaro. Speculation in the automotive press has centered on assembly plants in Oshawa, Ontario, and Wilmington, Del.
Other unanswered questions are sure to keep the buzz going even after Wagoner's announcement:
How many people will buy a Camaro in the age of $3.15-per-gallon gasoline?
What will it cost?
And what about bringing back the Pontiac Firebird/TransAm?" |

Gas prices aren't such a big concern with one of these esp. if they have the 4-cylinder deactivation system in the V-8. If I didn't already have one I might buy one. In fact I may still sell mine for a brand new big-engined V-8, but with another kid on the way, I probably better just stick with what I have. Its not as hot, but its almost paid off. 8/6/2006 7:45:55 PM |

^^^Agreed, I am a fool for the 69. But some/most of the 90's were nice, 80's weren't great...

I agree, I love 67-69, then I couldn't stand them until 90s. This one is light years ahead of the previous models though and is so much hotter than mine could ever be. I think its light-years ahead of the Mustang too, which I will say looks damn good in my opinion. 8/6/2006 7:53:09 PM |

i had hoped that gm would modify that concept's main grill, but i guess not. i can't stand how the top corners look. i think it completely fucks up the overall look of the front end. other than that, i love the design. the low roofline/high doors look awesome! in conjuction with the arched rear wheel wells, the concept has a really menacing stance. 8/6/2006 11:07:08 PM |

That is the concept cars look too. They haven't announced what the production model will look like. Obviously it will be pretty much the same, but they may make some adjustments. Besides, as with most concepts, they usually put massive wheels on them, and I'd be very surprised if they came equipped like that from the factory. 8/7/2006 6:55:48 AM |

Nighthawk All American 19623 Posts user info edit post |
I say the Firebird ain't happening. Why you ask? Because the market is too tight and the Firebird ate up more of the Fbody budget. Firebirds always cost more than Camaros, sold like maybe half as many as the Camaro, and had so many more choices associated with it that cost more money from the budget. Think, it had more bumper options, hood options, rims, 3 V-8 options to Camaros 2, etc. With the GTO and Solstice in the Pontiac stable right now Pontiac is being positioned more as the luxury or adult vehicles from Chevy and probably doesn't have the room for another RWD performance machine.
I would like to see it, but with the General as a company losing so much money (10 billion last year) its not going to drop into two cars that are seriously going to compete with each other. 8/7/2006 11:02:14 AM |

They are going to have two V-8 versions. Now if folks buy the V-6 for better fuel mileage thats their own damn fault. Shit I'd like some dumbass in a new V-6 to pull up next to my old V-8 and rev like his is hot shit. I'd smoke that fucking faggot. 8/8/2006 7:45:04 AM |

I think that's more of a concept shot.
It'd explain why the wheels are huge, and the mirrors are tiny.
Gives it a different, "cooler" look. It's just not practical, so the production models tend to look more... conservative.8/9/2006 1:15:33 AM |

^Yes it has cylinder deactivation on the V-8s. The Corvette Z06 gets like 27 mpg on the highway, so if this isn't tuned up as high, we could possibly see 30 mpg. In fact thats the rumor that is going around, that it gets 30+.
^^And yes, thats just the concept they unveiled first of the year. The real production model has not been seen yet. And of course things are exaggerated on the concept cars. I would be surprised if the production model came with 22's on the back and 21's on the front standard. 8/9/2006 9:26:06 AM |

This seals the deal. I am stopping working on mine immediately and will begin putting money aside to buy one of these.
In fact, somebody pointed out a great idea for Chevy would be to let customers start an account at their local dealership and make payments in advance to start saving up for the car, and pay interest on the money that is put in. I'd love if they did that! 8/10/2006 4:49:13 PM |
