Just got this in my inbox from coworkers...
Quote : | "Due to heightened airport security restrictions implemented by Homeland Security (effective immediately), you should expect lengthy delays at all US airports and note the following stringent guidelines for carry-on items: Laptop computers, cell phones, and Blackberry or Blackberry-style devices may not be carried through security; they must be in checked baggage
Liquid items may be packed in checked baggage, but will not be allowed in carry-ons
Any passengers who attempt to carry liquid items through security will be asked to dump those items out, regardless of what they are (except for the exclusions noted below)
All shoes, regardless of make or model, must be removed and passed through the X-ray machines
Prescription medicine will be permitted on board, even in liquid form, provided that the name on the prescription bottle matches the name of the passenger
Baby food and formula will be allowed for passengers traveling with babies, but is subject to inspection by security officials " |
Quote : | "All -
These rules seem to be inconsistently applied. I just got through ATL airport security. Computers, blackberries and cell phones seemed to be going through security without problems.
Toothpaste, deodorant, perfume, water, lipstick, hair gel, hairspray, contact lens solution and baby formula were all things we saw confiscated this morning." |
Quote : | "I just made it through Laguardia with BB, cell phone, and computer, but had to check roller bag with toiletries. Security lines here are 2-3 hours, though. " |

From our travel advisory notice, it appears as if all flights orignating in the UK have been restricted to NO CARRY ONS, only being allowed to carry on your wallet and passport in a baggie essentially.
Also, our company has suspended any travel that is not already pending to or from the UK untill next week.
interesting. 8/10/2006 10:09:41 AM |

yeah, toiletries are a no-go right now for domestic flights. we'll see how long it lasts, I imagine they'll want to try and roll the restrictions back as soon as they can, to avoid even worse delays tomorrow for business travellers coming home for the weekend. so maybe you'll be lucky, but it doesn't look good right now. 8/10/2006 10:13:44 AM |

i may just cancel the trip to raliegh for the weekend and only take the business flights to texas and back.

Quote : | "In addition, the threat level has been raised to "high," or orange for all commercial flights operating in or coming to the United States, the DHS said.
The nation's overall terror threat level has not been altered.
Thursday was the first time the DHS has raised the threat level for a specific group of flights.
"Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions from being carried on the airplane," a DHS statement said.
While there is no indication of plotting within the United States, Chertoff issued a statement saying "we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted."
That means airline passengers around the country should show up at least two hours early for all flights, an official with the Transportation Security Administration told CNN.
"Travelers should go about their plans confidently, while maintaining vigilance in their surroundings and exercising patience with screening and security officials," Chertoff said.

Quote : | "Protecting the Aviation System. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be implementing a series of security measures – some visible and some not visible – to ensure the security of the traveling public and the Nation's transportation system. TSA is immediately implementing following changes to airport screening procedures: NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency. Exception: Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft. Passengers traveling from the U.K. to the U.S. will be subject to a more extensive screening process. Some measures will not be visible to the public. In light of the elevated threat level, the Federal Air Marshals Service (FAMS) will provide expanded mission coverage for flights from the United Kingdom to the United States. These measures will be constantly evaluated and updated when circumstances warrant. DHS and its components have coordinated closely with the air carrier industry, airports, and state and local stakeholders to implement these significant, but necessary, security measures. The traveling public can assist these agencies in carrying out their important security duties by: Packing lightly, without clutter to facilitate easier screening. Check with your air carrier well before your flight departs for information on when you shoudl arrive at the airport. Cooperating with TSA personnel at all checkpoints and gates because TSA Security Officers will be checking carry-on baggage at the gate. Being attentive and vigilant to any suspicious activity. Protecting U.S.Borders. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will increase enforcement efforts in international arrival areas including the use of advanced targeting tools, special response teams including baggage and aircraft search teams, baggage x-ray equipment, specially-trained canine units, and explosive detection technology. i had seen the other Lounge thread about the terror plot in the UK, but made a new thread anyway so it could have a title that would better alert people who might be flying in the US; thought that would be more helpful and reach more people if there was a new thread in the lounge about it with a title directly about airport security

Statistically speaking, how likely is it for the same method/technique to be used successively in a short period of time vs. a longer period of time? I find it interesting there's usually a raised alert level of some sort, and then after a period of time things calm down, restrictions are loosened, and the possibility remains again.8/10/2006 11:04:13 AM |

Chertoff said the plotters were "getting close to the execution phase."

Passengers "were not yet sitting on an airplane," but were very close to traveling, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official told The Associated Press.

So it's not like they were actively raiding people at the airport, or caught anyone with these explosive liquids going through security; this still hadn't even happened yet. So why the big fuss at all at the airport today, just because you caught the guys doing it? Just in case someone was planning on doing it today as a dry run, to let the rest of the guys know if it worked? Just in case one of them got away and figures they could bump up the execution of a highly sophisticated plot that they weren't quite ready for yet by grabbing a ticket to the US today?
THIS SOME BULLSHIT
