Quote : | "Q&A with Wolfpack's Chuck Amato KEN TYSIAC ktysiac@charlotteobserver.com
After he quietly quit wearing his red sneakers last season, Chuck Amato directed N.C. State to a flashy 5-1 record over the final six games, ending with a 14-0 defeat of South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte. Three first-round draft picks, including No. 1 overall selection Mario Williams, are gone from the line that made N.C. State's one of the most fearsome defenses in the nation the past two seasons. That leaves junior quarterback Marcus Stone, who has won despite shaky performances, as the team's leader.
Q. How do you define a successful season? We had a successful season last year. Very. There are a lot of ways you can look at that. Look at numbers of wins and all this other stuff, and how you project with other schools in this state, because that's what you start recruiting. And somebody just asked a recruiting question -- you have to have a base out of your home state. You do the numbers on that in our state, (N.C. State) has been very successful. Number of bowls. Number of wins in bowls. And all that other stuff.
Q. Could you talk about your quarterback situation with Stone, and obviously he came on as a leader and a player at the end of last season. How are you looking for him to develop? You said it all. You asked the question and answered it. I don't know how I can say any more than that. He's started six games, and he's 5-1. And to me the object of the quarterback is to lead your team to win and put the ball in the end zone.
Q. You're listing Reggie Davis as the starter at linebacker on the depth chart. Can you talk about his grasp on the position at this point? We've only had three days to work with him this spring, and he showed something. And the only way we can find out is we've got to make sure he gets in there and he's got the right people around him so we're sure he's not measured with inferior people or against inferior people. And the mental aspect of it, he's a very smart individual.
Q. What intangibles does he have that will allow him to succeed? He's big, he's fast and he's tough. We put together a film, we do it every year, of the top hits from the previous year, big hits. Last year we had seven from the year before with a defense that was No. 1 in the country. You didn't have to be on offense or defense or anything to be on there. And he was in three of them, and he knocked the you-know-what out of somebody. So I'm sure he likes the physical contact of it.
Q. You were the defensive coordinator in '79 when N.C. State won (the ACC title). Could you ever have imagined all these years would go by without winning another one? No.
Q. Why? Because you think it can happen. You know when Florida State came into the league, no one won it but them. That's all. Did that make the other coaches poor?
Q. How is your defense going? You lost some pretty good players. I don't know. The standard has been set there. We had a good spring. There are obviously going to be a lot of young people replacing people for us that went high in the draft, but that's college football.
N.C. State
LAST SEASON: 7-5, 3-5 ACC
RETURNING STARTERS: 5 offense, 6 defense
PLAYERS TO WATCH: C Leroy Harris, Sr. (6-3, 300); DT DeMario Pressley, Jr. (6-4, 293); TB Andre Brown, So. (6-1, 232); TB Toney Baker, So. (5-10, 228); P/K John Deraney, Sr. (6-4, 224)
TOP NEWCOMER: QB Justin Burke, Fr. (6-2, 195)
OBSERVATIONS: Offensive coordinator Marc Trestman has a lot to prove after the Wolfpack averaged 20.8 points in his first season. ... Sophomores Andre Brown and Toney Baker make for a fabulous tailback rotation. ... It's time for junior DT DeMario Pressley to live up to his Parade All-America hype.
SCHEDULE: Sept. 2, Appalachian State; 9, Akron; 16, at Southern Mississippi; 23, Boston College; Oct. 5, Florida State; 14, Wake Forest; 21, at Maryland; 28, at Virginia; Nov. 4, Georgia Tech; 11, at Clemson; 18, at North Carolina; 25, East Carolina

I think it is just really hard to gauge a defense against your own team.

Actually I think he learned his lesson about jacking expectations up if he's not 100% sure he'll deliver, and he's playing it safe. 8/15/2006 12:31:28 PM |
