If I get the basic 80-hr Tivo box that comes free with a subscription will it record from satelite in HD as long as I have an HD receiver or will I lose the HD on the recording? Its the TIVO Series 2 DVR that I am looking at.

I don't know, haven't gotten one yet because I am unsure of the recording capabilities, but I wouldn't think it would record HD either.

to the best of my knowledge the only Tivos that will do HD are the ones that come with Direct TV.

I know for a fact that the "basic 80-hr" ones won't.

it won't record 720p or 1080i.. but if you output an HD channel over svideo it'll record it, in 480i of course..

and it'll be letterboxed and won't be true HD but the picture will looking a little better than a standard definition source.

wait for the series 3 tivos to come out in the next few months.. they'll do HD recording.. 6 tuners i believe inside the box..
