i know how to swim and I was a lifeguard, but really Im not trying to make this a black guy/swimmer/racial thing. it's that fact that someone at NC State besides a basketball/football/baseball player is doing something like this and is getting worldwide recognition 8/17/2006 2:30:45 PM |

congrats to him. hopefully he becomes a national icon, and draws some good media attention to State. lord knows we need it. it'd be sweet to see him win an Olympic gold medal someday.

i'm glad he will be doing this. i remember ESPN doing a story on the lack of black baseball players now, and how many inner city schools that are predominantly black have trouble filling out the roster on their baseball teams, b/c all of the kids want to be the next Kobe, Jordan, or Vick. the problem with that is that a lot of these kids are under 6 feet tall. you could have a very athletic kid who is 5'10" and make an excellent short stop or other position on the field, yet he's off chasing unrealistic basketball dreams. i'm not saying that a 5'10" kid couldn't make it, i mean look at Mugsey Bogues and Spud Webb, but the probability that you will become a star player begins to get smaller. him doing this could help get some athletic black kids that don't have the football and basketball form to into the sport of swimming.8/17/2006 2:57:32 PM |

^good point.....i plan to expose my kids to as many sports as possible...baseball, basketball, football, soccer, swimming, tennis, gold, hell even cheerleading, let them decide on what to do and not put a big focus on one until they have their mind set on that. 8/17/2006 3:03:25 PM |

that's the way i'll be with my kids. i played hockey, and my parents didn't know much about the sport before i started. now they love it, and understand the game like they had played it. i definitely will try to get them to try hockey though. 8/17/2006 3:11:15 PM |

i played football, baseball, basketball all throughout my life..once i got to 8th grade i decided to take on track, continued that into 11th grade, then i decided to play soccer(my parents knew nothing about soccer and now they want my little stepbrother to play), I also played tennis one year. I also tried out gymnastics a couple of years at a summer camp thing in high school. 8/17/2006 3:16:52 PM |
