So my dad is trying to decide between these two at the dealer.

2006 4Runner Limited - it has around 15,500 miles and is almost $34,000 - which is crazy for a Toyota in my opinion

2002 BMW X5 - 67,000 miles and about $24,000.

He came to look at 4Runners and happened to see the X5 there. After test driving both, he likes the BMW a lot better and might be trading his Cadillac in on it, too.

Both of them have the works - sunroofs, leather, nice sound systems, etc. Both are in impeccable condition, and he's only going to be throwing mulch in the back of it, groceries, bringing furniture home and stuff like that.

Opinions?

those two vehicles aren't comparable at all

and my advice is that if you're going to use it as a car (which i'm sure he will), get a car. a car will do a much better job of being a car than a truck (or whatever an X5 is) will.

He just wants a smaller SUV and doesn't really care about other stuff. He's getting this to replace his '78 F150 Supercab, since he is getting too old to maintain it like it needs to be. Even though he just put a new engine in it last summer, he's selling it because it needs some other work. I really don't think a 62 year old retired Army Sgt. Major is pretentious for being old and wanting a nice car...don't most old people have nice, comfy cars? He has an 04 Cadillac Deville that he's giving to my mom when he trades her Cadillac in. They like old people cars...

Yeah, but there's not as much trunk room. He wants an SUV, not another sedan. He reallllly liked the 4Runner too, but it's just too much money, especially for a Toyota. We looked at a few other 4Runners that were used, and they were all pretty much expensive. There was a 2000 with 98,000 miles on it that they wanted $18k for, as well as a 2002 with I think 43,000 miles for $23,980.

the smart thing would be to get a 67kmile 4runner for less than the X5 and be more reliable. but id probably get the X5 as its a much better handling "street" SUV.

the only thing I would warn you about is that the X5 is no longer under the 50,000 mile free services that the BMWs come with. You are going to end up paying A LOT more for your normal oil changes and anything else that the car has to go to the dealer for. The maintenence on the Toyota will be a lot less.

Just something to look into...

If he wants trunk room then get a subaru legacy wagon. We had 2 4runners and they were great to take offroad and stuff, I don't think that a BMW is really meant for that. They are 2 totally different vehicles.

I mean, he's not going to be off-roading or anything too crazy. Just something to replace his truck if the weather is bad, or if he needs to buy some furniture or a tv or plants or something. I know they're two different vehicles, but to him, they're not. He can fix any car made before about 1995, when they got all computerized and whatnot, and has owned a lot of cars before, over here, and in europe and asia, so it's just an issue of cost, reliability, and how much leg room they have. He said absolutely not on account of the 2002 4Runner just because he didn't have enough leg room and didn't feel comfy in the seats.

He's having me take the X5 to our mechanic today to have him look it over - he used to work at the Performance BMW here in Chapel Hill and takes care of my car, too. Someone mentioned the costs of upkeep on the cars, but other than my frequent oil changes ($35), because I commute to school, I haven't had any problems, and I just hit 80,000 miles.

As an auto tech who works on various euro luxury brands and himself drives a BMW 5 series, I will say the X5 is a very nice car.

But my fiance drives a 4Runner Limited v8.


$34k for a '06 4Runner Limited? im guessing its the v6 model maybe? what engine is in that X5?

The BMW offers more gadgets and creature comforts, and of course the "look at me in my BMW" factor, the 4Runner offers excellent reliability, comfort without gadgets, and "look another 4Runner" factor. He has to ask himself what he is really looking for out of his new vehicle.

He got the X5, after talking them down to $21,950, and they are paying for a few things our mechanic found on it - new serpentine belt, one rear tire that was dry rotting, and all new rotors. They also took his trade in (95 cadillac deville with 99k miles on it) for $3,500 so that basically covered the tax and doc fee, but he also bought an additional 2 year warranty on it. Not too shabby, and he's pleased. Now he's gonna old-man it up and put his Disabled Veterans of American vanity plate on it, as well as his Retired Army magnet.

He pulled up the Carfax on the 2006 4Runner, because he thought it was weird it didn't have a warranty, and it had been in a wreck, so he decided against that one.

for reliability purposes, id say go for the 4Runner. Toyotas are the highest rated in reliability. BMW is closer to the bottom IIRC.
