I think to build a program, you've got to win within the state first. In this state, there's five Division I-A schools. Check the record over the last six years. The second-winningest school in this state has won 30. That's five a year. We're two shy of winning eight a year... we're at 46. Take the other four schools in this state... how many bowls have they been to? Five. What's their record? 1-4. We've been to five. Our record is 4-1. We've got to get the bowls. Then when we get the bowls we've got to get hungry to get to that next big bowl. We had a little taste of it. We were just visiting... I'll be daggone. Somebody in Jacksonville told me this, I didn't know this. Since the Atlantic Coast Conference has been "in," after six seasons, the fourth-winningest coach is [me]. Somebody told me that. I didn't know that. Out of all the coaches to ever coach here. Daggone. After six years I won more games than Tommy Bowden... and more games than... if I'm on one, so be it. I don't know why I should be. Because we're winning... we're going to bowls. We're close. I thought what George Welsh did at the University of Virginia was absolutely awesome. When I got here, he was one of five or six teams in the country that had won seven or more games, I believe ten years in a row. I came one short of being seven or more... had I won one and had a chance to go to a bowl I might have been in that thing after seven years. I think that's awfully good. I look at what's happening. I look at where we're at and where we've come from. I don't know. Do you?" - Chuck Amato responding to the question "Do you feel like you're on the hot seat?" " |

It looks to be an exact transcription.
Have you ever listened to someone talk? I mean really listen?
Nobody talks in complete, fully coherent sentences when they're just talking like Amato was talking then.
He was in the middle of a thought and then he shifted gears.
You should hear some of the stuff people say when they're being interviewed. It's unbelievable. 8/22/2006 3:07:49 PM |

if you read the conversation you just posted you will see that instead of just the facilities he talks about his record against in state competition and bowl games. The only reason Amato is on the hot seat is because NC State fans are hungry for a championship....ACC or National.... in B-ball or Football. Look what that hunger did to the B-ball program. Granted i didnt like sendek's demeanor when he coached, but he still won quite a bit.8/22/2006 3:22:23 PM |

Are these the same fans that Booed him last year... I like Amato, but there are fans that feel like he has underacheived with the talent he has had. And with the way Sendek was treated, I would be a little worried about this season and possibly being on the hot seat. 8/22/2006 3:24:17 PM |

That is Wins not facilities...how can you get all over this guy...look at where we came from. We lost to teams like SMU and Baylor under O'Cain...99 and prior was far from where we are now. Just give him time and it will keep going in the right direction...and facilities do help recruit which will bring in the players to win more...
Lets fire him so we can be out of Bowl contention by October 1 like it was 1999 and prior...sounds like fun.

O'cain lost to Baylor the following week after beating FSU...and only won about 4 games that year
O'cain lost SMU or Arkansas St the week after Texas
Oh yeah...in 98 and 99 O'cain lost to UNC on a neutral field...not to mention the lost to ECU in there too.

i dont see how you get off saying that hes claiming facilities as a means of proving his ability as a coach.

i mean herb's degree of success was pretty close to chuck's in my eyes
making the tourney 6 years in a row, winning ACC coach of the year, and a sweet 16 appearance are pretty mediocre when you consider what a powerhouse State used to be
but at the same time having one 11-3 season (by beating a plethora of shitty teams and only finishing 4th in the ACC), several unnoteworthy bowl berths and two top 5 NFL draft picks seems pretty mediocre with all of the money State has thrown at its football program
im an equal opportunity hater and if chuck wants to deliver on the hype he's generated, i think criticism is certainly warranted 8/22/2006 4:29:14 PM |
