i just got an inspiron e1505, and need some help. it was shipped to my parents house, and they installed microsoft office on it for me and kinda set stuff up. which is annoying. because the main user name and stuff is now 'parents' and i don't know how to change it, or if it can be changed. when my computer has been idle for a while and i move the mouse, it says its locked and only 'parents' or 'amazon' can unlock it. somehow i set the password, so at least i know it, but is there any way to change it so that 'parents' isnt listed there?

start :: control panel :: user accounts ... click on parents, click the delete option.

Even if you just change the name in User Accounts, Windows still still call it the old name internally.

Your best bet is to go back to User Accounts and just create a new one for yourself. THEN login as the new one, and THEN go back to User Accounts and delete "Parents."

There's no such thing. There's an Administrator account, and then there are accounts with admin privs. Administrator doesn't show up unless you manually open it, or if there are no other accounts on the machine.

The "Parents" can be deleted once you've created another account and make it a "computer administrator."

^^^ that worked! so if i delete the old account, will everything be deleted? bc on the new one, there's stuff i downloaded (aim, mozilla, itunes..) and things that were put on first account but are also on the new one (microsoft office). will those still be on the new account?

Applications should all still be there. I don't remember if other files (like My Documents, etc.) get deleted, or if you're offered the opportunity to move them somewhere else.

don't have any documents saved on it yet. just worried about itunes, etc, but they all transferred over so i guess it's ok to delete the original user? although this new user account doesn't have as many desktop items as the other one.

^ that'd be a good thing imo, i hate desktop clutter

but you probably should make sure you don't have any documents/images/files there that you need, if it's all shortcuts then copy what you need and be rid of the account.

^me neither ugh. and i think there's a main folder that saves all important apps called 'all users' so i might be safe. if not oh well, ill just start over. pretty easy to do at this point since i don't have anything on the comp/it's all on the external.
