ok, im wanting to build a stereo system

main focus is music....but slim possiblity of using it in conjunction with video as well

what im looking for is a receiver unit that i can hook up to one of my computers, to play music

id also like to run a turntable

id also like it to have at least a single cd player

im not particularly looking for a complete, speakers included system, i have some decent speakers i could use with it til my wallet affords me some newer, better speakers

nearly any receiver will hook up to your computer with the right cable.

I'd recommend a reciever that can take discreet 6 channel imputs as well as digial coax and optical inputs. This will cover all computer options for audio. As for video, if you're outputting VGA, you'll need a reciever that takes component video input. That's a little old school. Newer video cards have DVI and HDMI or a similar spec is planned for the future. DVI input is good, HDMI is a little better. A reciever that has both will be optimal. A reciever that can handel highend video signals is expensive. Frankly, more home theater recievers surrently on the market will do what you need them to. Just find one in your price range that will give enough wattage to your speakers and you'll be good to go. You haven't defined any other criteria so it's hard to make a suggestion that's more specific.
