Guns arent bad in themselves

they just allow stupid people to do greater harm onto others than they could otherwise do

guns are bad...at least, handguns are (not counting huge, scoped .44 mags and TC Contenders, etc).

but what are we doing to do about it?

that's like saying that nuclear weapons are horrible devices. No shit--that's the point. What're we gonna do, just get rid of all of ours? Hell no.

If so that is very wrong.

Guns are simply tools. In the right hands, said tools keep this country free, put food on the table, provide security for homes and neighborhoods, provide recreation and competition for marksmen (and women), give collectors the enjoyment of preserving a beautifully crafted instrument, and so on.

In the wrong hands, a screwdriver or a hammer or an axe can be deadly weapons. What matters is what one does with the tools available.

Guns are fun (just like alchohol, tobacco, polygamy etc) the government doesn't like its people to have fun.

Cars are for killing your family members often and acccidentally

Guns are for keeping the red man off your land since they get drunk off firewater and rape your daughter

fundamentally theres just a difference between people who expect the cops to come save them in a crisis and therefore dont take precautions of their own, and people who take responsibility for their own actions

So just like cars you should have to pass a test, purchase insurance, and carry a government issued license to use them? Sounds like a plan.

an iraqi family could have a full automatic AK-47 when i was there.

but only 1 weapon in total for home defense.

damn we confiscated a shit ton of weapons when i think about it.

Ah alright, so because people who drive stolen cars don't have insurance nobody should have to buy it right?

well if you want to legally buy a gun, they run background checks on you

and you have the option to buy insurance on just about anything

and in order to get a concealed carry permit, for example, you have to pass both a written test pertaining to firearms laws, as well as a field / shooting accuracy test

so it sounds like there are enough regulations in place already

Haha, background checks? Last I heard, you can't drive a car from a car show without a license and insurance, but you can buy a gun from a gun show without any background check.

That's still a hell of a lot less than you have to go through to own a car. "Option" of buying insurance? Yeah, that's comparable to requiring all drivers to purchase insurance.

Requiring someone to go through the licensing system to drive a car at all is in no way comparable to the option of going through the concealed weapons permit system. If you want to compare guns to cars in terms of being possibly lethal, then you're going to have to admit that we go through a lot more trouble regulating cars than guns. That seems a little silly when death by automobile is almost always accidental and a not an intended purpose of the device.

So if you want to compare guns to cars in an argument, that's fine as long as you're suggesting we extend a similar regulation regime to gun ownership and use as we do to car ownership and use.

^^well obviously cars have a more practical everyday purpose than guns for most city folk...if we lived out in the sticks and had to hunt to eat i'm sure guns might serve a more practical purpose

also the roads and thoroughfares are designed to be an interlinked system of thousands of drivers...i drive a car pretty much every day and i dont shoot guns every day...the sheer large amount of usage of cars and interdependency of others requires more because more people are involved

and most automobile deaths are accidental although nobody intends to drive drunk and kill someone...unless its an arab at UNC or an paki in san fransisco that hits 14 people

oh yeah, and cars arent protected by the US Constitution

Quote :
"we go through a lot more trouble regulating cars than guns"

I dont completely agree...the minimum age for gun ownership is higher than cars...18 for long guns, 21 for handguns...there have been regulations of limiting handgun magazines to 10 rounds...whereas in one sense, any 16 year old kid can take drivers ed, pass a written test, or keep taking it until they pass it, and basically make a few turns and parallel park in the presence of a DMV officer and get a license

^^ So is speach, but that still has its limits too. Did I even say ban guns or prevent gun ownership?

An ex-felon can't vote, but can go to a gun show and buy a gun. Are you saying we have a greater right to own a gun than to vote?

no but at the same time, i wasnt really comparing guns to cars

and i am in the midst of my 90-day waiting period for my CCP so I think I personally am going through the right channels

also the insurance thing is kind of silly...general liability or collision are for the protection of others so you dont fuck up their cars, for the most part...are you going to get gun insurance so you dont shoot someone elses gun, rendering it inoperable? if you shoot somebody the "insurance" would be payment via fine, jail time, etc

in regards to ex-cons not being able to vote...its kinda fucked up...but again, its in the constitution...the state can deny criminals the right to vote (14th amendment)...blame the forefathers

you've already proven you don't know shit about this

you can't buy a gun from a gun show... or anywhere for that matter, without a "NICS" (yellow form) check... (thats when the FBI checks you out for purchase)
you also cannot carry concealed without passing classes, shooting proficiency tests, and a 90 day period where you have to have fingerprints done, and FBI, and a CCBI background check performed on you

to purchase a handgun, you must get permits(FBI background check) and a 7 day waiting period
and then you still have to fill out the paperwork, go through a NICS checks, and have valid ID

Quote :
"That seems a little silly when death by automobile is almost always accidental and a not an intended purpose of the device."

so now you're saying that gun deaths are more intentional than accidental?
I'm willing to say (not 100% sure) that more gun deaths are accidents than are intentional you do something dumb with anything (ie: car, gun, knife) there is a pretty gun chance that you could die

Quote :
"An ex-felon can't vote, but can go to a gun show and buy a gun. Are you saying we have a greater right to own a gun than to vote?"

you really don't know shit do you?
it's illegal for a convicted felon to possess, use, purchase, or attempt to purchase a firearm

they forfeited that right when they committed a felony(honestly I believe that once released and in good standing, they should be able to purchase arms for hunting or home defense... the govt should not take away ones right to defense)
