So my roommate is a bittorent fiend. He's torrenting 24/7 and I bitched enough until he toggled it down. However whenever I torrent as well overnight it crashes my linksys router. Crash being that it locks it in a state where I can access the internet but he can't etc..

Is there a router/switch (possible garfus sells) that's not mindblowing to configure and allows for routing to static ips than can handle that kind of traffic?

If it's over $100 I'm gonna tell my roommate to deal.

^^ i'd suggest you figure out what your total upload bandwidth is, if it maxes at 30KB/s, then you don't want to use more than 20 ideally each of you should set your u/l at 10KB/s capped for bittorrent. this rule applies that you shouldn't be u/ling more than 70% your total max or your downstream connection suffers.

for downloads it doesn't matter, but if both of you are using it then you might as well be nice and share it 50/50 so your clients (and the router) aren't fighting for it, which could potentially be your problem.

one other thing to check is how many connections you are allowing. i know in utorrent the setting is under Preferences :: BitTorrent, then "Global maximum number of connections" and "Maximum number of connected peers per torrent". you really don't need those numbers very high, but if you start creating thousands of connections then your router will definitely choke back the big one. that's probably why it's killing his connection and not yours, he's likely requesting more connections than the router can handle, so it drops him and leaves you alone. On average you shouldn't have more than 100 connections per torrent, and you shouldn't download more than 3-4 at a time. Power cycle/reset the router daily (morning would be best). Problem solved.

Are you guys constantly downloading? If not, turn off your bittorrent clients. Seems to be the easier solution.
