I'm just waiting for the 8gb+ iPod nano. I don't want a lot of features like video, e-mail, and astrology calculator. I just want good sound quality, good battery life, a good UI, and something of reasonable size. Give me that and I'll throw in my Sennheiser HD595s and be happy

why can't apple seem to come out with a fire-engine red iPod? they had all these neon colors in the mini, and now again in the nano.

yeah i didn't think they would rescusicate those colors again, especially after they killed the neon imacs, ibooks, and the ipod minis. seemed like they were trying to project a more serious image.

they tried their hand at these funky colors, what they need now are some sober colors. my ideas would be:

ruby red
topaz blue
emerald green

and maybe even

steel grey (or graphite) and
orange (but not a flashy neon one).

It doesn't look like we're getting a full new iPod today. Unless Steve is saving that for the end. So far we've got redesigned videos, shuffles, and nanos but no touchscreen iPod. Right now they're talking about the new iTV that you can use to stream music and video wirelessly to your TV. Big whoop.

^ Yeah that's GOT to change. I'd imagine college folks are a huge market share of iPod buyers. There's lots of broken links and junk on the site, I'm *hoping* prices will reflect discounts soon, but considering how relatively cheap they already are, it may not actually happen.

No REAL new iPod is stupid. Stop dragging it along and bust out a widescreen/touchscreen iPod, even if it's $600+. Leave the other 5G options, but for goodness sake unveil a real video iPod.

Last, limiting the colored nanos to only 4GB is very dumb. I'll bet quite a few folks will want a colored nano in 2 or 8GB flavors.

I was expecting to have to resist the urge to buy something, but honestly there's nothing I see that I want. A fireengine red nano would've seriously struck me right though

When they say the new nanos are available immediately, is that just available online for immediate shipping, or if I go by the Apple store on my way home will I be able to get one? I am just about enough of an impulse buyer to pick up an 8GB if I can do it NOW.

i'll have to see them in person, but i can't say i'm a big fan of the new Nanos, mostly because I hated the Minis.
I always thought the iPod Mini was a bastard-child of the iPod - the brushed metal, the overly-rounded sides, but most of all, that awful "sharp" edge along the top and bottom..... i dunno, it just didn't feel polished to me, like the regular iPod and the 1st gen Nanos. With the sharp edges along the top and bottom, there are really 3 distinct surfaces on the Mini/New Nano. I prefer the slightly rounded edges and corners around the whole device, making it feel like there's only one surface.

but the new Shuffles though..... that's hot.





And we have something to look foward to in the iTV, to be released next year - finally an easy way to stream video from your computer to your TV, without having an actual media center computer. I'm not saying I would/will get one, but i think that's a major missing spot in the market now. There is still no easy way to get video from your computer to your TV except for making a media center PC and keeping it next to/near your computer (although i think the XBox 360 can do this with some add-ons). I very much look forward to the say when i can have a central house server with music/videos/pictures and seamlessly and easily stream them to any number of TVs

^^a modded xbox can stream from a networked HD to a TV, as well as do a lot of other mediacenter type things. Its much cheaper than a home theater PC, and I'm sure this iTV will be DRM-laden just like everything else apple releases.

The other 98% of the world NEEDS a company like Apple to come along and put everything in a nice pretty little package for them and charge them twice the price.

The core market is people that would rather pay $2 to download last night's episode of lost rather than just DVR it in the first place. And now they can watch it on their TVs. Apple will make millions off this product.

Thats a pretty big assumption to make, since the two things have pretty much nothing in common with each other. I'm not saying it won't sell. For $300 bucks, I might think about buying one. The problem I have with it is the same problem I have with my iPod. I use my iPod all the time, and its a good mp3 player, but theres no reason it shouldn't play formats like FLAC or ogg vorbis. When I buy a cd and rip it to my pc to put on the ipod, I'd rather be using a lossless format sometimes, and i'd rather not be forced to use Apples lossless codec. The same goes with this thing. Say I ripped a DVD to my HD and I encoded it to Divx. I'm betting this iTV box isn't going to play it. The world doesn't NEED a company like apple to put this out. The world needs a company to make a product like this that isn't attached to some proprietary service that will only play their DRMed format. That way, people don't wind up 5 years from now with a bunch of 640x480 videos that won't play on their new set-top box, and they'll be pissed that they spent $400 on every episode of full house.

They're not trying to meet the needs of the knowledgeable power users. They're trying to bring this sort of technology to the masses.
