it is well known that a good portion of the RBC Center was funded by a Wake County Hotel tax.

The thing is if we say Amato got us the improved facilities then we have to hold him accountable for what he said. He came in here promising certain things [which obviously raised expectations and donations to the program] and has yet to follow through.

So yes, we can say he helped the ball rolling on the new facilities, but he also could end up being his own enemy...

no Wake County taxpayer money was used in the building of the RBC Center. it was all private donations and the Wake County Hotel Tax (hence it only being those that stayed at a hotel in Wake County which more times than not is someone from out of town).

That my be so but it's not like Amato was the first one that thought of improving our facilities... btw I think it's ridiculous to think Herb had anything to do with the RBC Center being built...

if the hurricanes hadnt come to town, would we even have an RBC Center? Just asking, I figure they had something to do with getting it approved.

Herb is partially responsible for it. If Les was still the coach and we were still in the crapper I don't think it would have been built.*

You can even argure that we woudn't have gotten the Hurricanes if it weren't for Herb.*

If it wasn't for Herb Sendek, North Carolina would still be without a professional sports championship!*

*this may not be true at all, just stirring the pot

^^ I'm glad we left Reynolds, we can now brag about having possibly the nicest facilities in the NCAA (possibly split with Memphis)

But I do wish we played a bigger game in Reynolds than the scrubs we play in there. Schedule a major ACC Rival, Wake or Maryland maybe (they would never accept lost ticket sales from not having Duke or UNC in the RBC)

^^ hahah, just remembered you pulling for Cal, and in my drunken haze before and after the game that was the only thing I could think up haha. Well, after the game it was "go home, you are horrible"

but I actually met a lot of cool Cal fans, got several places to stay out there if I go out there for the game next year

you're right, it's not.

the new arena was planned well before herb arrived at NCSU. Again, it was Valvano's dream, but the coming of the hurricanes was the catalyst that provided the financial feasibility.

Nice.. If I'm still in this area I'm definitely going to that game.

I got tix for the Oregon game here.. it'll be the first time I see a Cal game though I'd probably rather the Ducks win.

I think some of you are forgetting one big name that played a role in the development of both facilities. Mary Anne Fox.

As much as I dislike some of her actions during her tenure, it was Fox who decided she was unsatisfied with the performance of State football, after being the chancellor at Texas. She was the one who showed up at O'Cain's door and decided he his services wasn't needed any more. She lit a fire to get the football program to be where she thought it could be. Even introduced the tradition of lighting the bell tower red after any major Wolfpack accomplishment, a practice that was done at UT.

Fox lit a fire for the building process of RBC and fought over nameing rights (which she lost) and the correct color of the seats (which was unresolved), two things I do remember she debated other officials over. I don't credit her with getting the ball rolling for the RBC, but she had a huge effect on where it landed.

If Fox hadn't come over from Texas, Amato would have never had the opportunity to get over here to State and the plans were well underway prior to his hiring, he only asked for a guarantee that State would get things rolling once he arrived.

I know the purpose of this thread was to challenge the idea of Herb's affect with the RBC vs. Chuck's invovelment with the remodeling of CFS but i thought I had to throw this out there.

well I wanted to put this somewhere, and gunzz, this works for me!

I really don't understand how this loss to Akron means CTC should be fired. Sure we've had less than stellar years lately but we've come a Heck of a long way since he took over in Jan 2000. Facilities aside, football morphed from being something to break up the tailgating on Saturday's to the reason to tailgate, to thanks to the administration, the only enjoyable thing left on Saturday's (and the clock rules are taking that away too!)
In all seriousness with our previous track record and results we need to take another look at what CTC has brought to the program. While confidence misplaced or perceived to be undeserved may come across as ignorant or arrogant, I take it as having an unwaivering faith in your abilities and a laser like vision for what your program could be. Frankly I like it, and will be happy to support CTC for another 8 losses this year if need be.

The ESA/RBC Center was planned and approved well before the cane's thought of coming to town, as a matter of a fact it would have been a larger venue and cheaper if the cane's didn't come from what I remember. Making the arena meet NHL regs and adding things for the canes drove the price up, but with that came alot of other things to make it more profitable in the long run... it was probably one of the best tradeoffs that could have happened, the downside is all of the NHL banners hanging during basketball season and having a facility that isn't truely "ours" it was really a give and take... but I think it's working out well so far..

Um, that was exactly my point.

DRRR

2000 through 20003 were much better, AND how many bowls did we go to during the same time frame wit MOC?

2000-2003*

*=Philip Rivers was here.

The success that has occurred for NCSU since Amato has been here was 100% because Philip Rivers was here. As soon as Philip left, mediocre teams returned.

as for bowls...

1997- none
1998- L vs Miami
1999- none

2000-2003* Philip Rivers years....enough said.

2004- none
2005- W vs South Florida
2006- ??maybe??

Considering that we dont even own the RBC Center (were practically the redheaded stepchild in our "own house", and that we could potentially get kicked out of the building in the future, I dont think anyone got us anything. Remember the "Heritage Game" only came about because the RBC wanted to schedule Disney on Ice instead.

^ yeah, the very first basketball game in the RBC almost didn't happen. On top of that, there were talks that they would have to import Indiana's court for the first game.

^^We dont own the building, we lease it. When the current lease runs out, its possible that the RBC Center could choose not to renew that lease, or offer to only host the big games. Maybe that sounds "highly unlikely", the wheels have been in motion for awhile. Notice the Red/White game has been moved to Reynolds this year, and Ive heard talks of the exhibition games moving as well.

good, I like reynolds better as a basketball venue with the exception of the bigger games; do we really need to use the RBC center for a half-capacity ass whipping of UNC-A?
