They'd make my life 100x's easier

Is it the components, or just because the companies can get away with these prices for the time being?

I doubt we will ever see HD-resolution three-chip DLP systems reach a commodity price point... there are so many promising new display technologies that are supposedly maturing into actual products within the next 5-10 years I don't see market forces having enough time to work on DLP prices.

I am assuming that by LCD you mean DLP, because LCD projection technology is not cool anymore.

I've actually seen prices on some LCD projectors drop by as much as 20% in the past year.

Bulbs can run a couple hundred dollars - considering some projectors go for $600 I'd say the bulb alone is one thing that drives the initial and maintenance price up.

There are plenty of LCD projectors that are now rivaling 3 chip DLP systems, especially with technologies like LCoS and SXRD, plus no chance for rainbows (even though 3 chip systems have virtually no rainbow effect).

I'm releasing a book on our trip down the Mississippi River last year and will be doing a shit-ton of slideshows over the next 6 months. As much as I'd like an LCD projector, I'm seriously considering going old school and dragging along a regular slide projector. Damn near nothing to screw up besides the bulb, and I can pick 15 of them up for what a decent LCD projector will run.

You can check out some of the photos at our website http://www.sourcetosea.net
