TA'd for my master's. RA'd for PhD program (I'm on a semi-permanent vacation from PhDness right now)
Get the shit in writing, and seriously consider your options when it comes to programs and their funding. There's always a cost/benefit analysis to consider, and it may well be worth going to a lesser-tiered program if they're going to foot the bill unless you're in a super-specialized field. Most of the time, just having the paper in hand is the key, and I've seen way too many cohorts up to their asses in debt for what's not a highly-paid field to begin with. 9/20/2006 9:07:05 PM |

No help initially, just loans...
Worked out a TA for a little help, found a niche I could fill for a GA that was hourly for my first semester.
Then I was given a Powerbook and a tuition package. Now I have the TA money, GA stipend and tuition package, and a laptop.
I was very, very lucky and should be out of debt very soon. 9/20/2006 10:29:23 PM |

wow what a pretentious group of assholes. a lot of people go to graduate school without TAs, RAs, fellowships, or co-ops. some people are willing to invest in their future. I had a TA and was thankful for it, but geez. 9/21/2006 12:59:40 AM |

^ An assistantship shows that the school is willing to invest in you. In the academic world it's all about who you know and who you work for. You're not just earning an advanced degree, you're inheriting your advisor's reputation. Assistantship are a reflection of your value to an already respected scientist. That will carry weight as you begin to start your career and make your own name. 9/21/2006 1:15:35 AM |

if you are going back for engineering you should be able to get tuition plus at least 13.5k plus insurance easy. if you dont get at least that, then look at another program.
if you go to state and you had even a moderately good gpa, you are made 9/23/2006 12:01:03 AM |

I am sponsored by a company to do research for them (which is paying a nice salary also), in addition to having a formal research assistantship from the university, which gives me free tuition (even though I'm not taking classes) and a monthly stipend.
The money you get from an assistantship is chickenscratch, and you'll probably need to find additional sources of income to live comfortably. The free tuition waiver is worth it, though, especially if you're out of state. GaTech tried to get me to pay nearly $20k a year in OOS tuition just for me to do "research" under their name. Fuck that. 9/23/2006 12:25:40 AM |

Took out a small loan to cover living expenses. Since I am getting my masters in Sweden, tuition is free for everyone plus I get free medical care because of the social system. I'll probably apply for a scholarship next semester to cover all of my additional expenses. 9/23/2006 11:20:15 AM |

don't listen to people who say "don't go to grad school unless it's paid for"
if i had gone to grad school for what i did in undergrad (biological engineering), i could have had a full ride... but that wasn't what i WANTED to learn about. and it is not what i wanted to do for the rest of my life.
i just started grad school in industrial design and i love it so far... but i did have to take out loans to pay for it. some grad programs just don't have the funding that others do.. but if it is something you really want to do then i say go for it 9/24/2006 1:32:30 PM |
