2002 ACC Final Standings:
Florida State 7-1 Maryland 6-2 Virginia 6-2 North Carolina State 5-3 Georgia Tech 4-4 Clemson 4-4 Wake Forest 3-5 North Carolina 1-7 Duke 0-8
FSU is still FSU...however they are still in a decline as far as intimidating the rest of the ACC. Maryland and Virginia have really good seasons. We have one of best seasons ever and beat Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl. Tech and Clemson are solid and Wake does pretty damn good for Wake. Then we have two shitty teams in Duke and UNC. The main thing is the PERCEPTION. It looks like the ACC has GREAT NEW coaches. Amato, Groh, Friedgen, Grobe. It looks like it's going to be a battle for the next decade between the top 5 or 6 teams in the league.
2003 Final Standings:
Florida State 7-1 Maryland 6-2 Clemson 5-3 Virginia 4-4 North Carolina State 4-4 Georgia Tech 4-4 Wake Forest 3-5 Duke 2-6 North Carolina 1-7
Not as good a season for us, but we were still solid (we had a shitty defense that year). But FSU is still at the top, Maryland is at the top again. Tommy has a good year at Clemson and Virginia and GTech are solid. Wake has another good year for Wake and Duke and UNC bring up the bottom again. But hey...Duke got a couple ACC wins, even our bottom might not be so bad?? Bottom line is that we haven't lost the perception as having a conference with up and coming coaches.
2004 to the Present:
It starts going down hill. State and Maryland both go 3-5. These are two of the programs that everyone thought was going to challenge FSU. Wake goes 1-7...what happened to Grobe?? Lone bright spot is UNC, who somehow pulled out a 5-3 season. UVa goes 5-3, but what happened to all of that talent they were stockpiling?? They had some GREAT recruiting classes Groh's first couple years. The rest of the ACC is beginning to think that FSU, Miami, and VTech will run the league from here on out.
2005 gets worse. State, Maryland, and Virginia go 3-5. UNC somehow manages to go 4-4 and Wake goes 3-5. Duke is back to its extreme bottom feeding days. What makes it even worse is that FSU is now beatable by about anyone, but they still win the conference and only go 6-3 in conference. Miami isn't unbeatable anymore and neither is Virginia Tech. It's almost as if Miami and Vtech got worse when they joined the ACC. Bottom line is that our up-and-coming coaches are no longer up and coming. Amato, Groh, Bunting, Roof, and Friedgen will all be on the hotseat if they continue to perform the way they are performing this year. Coker is pretty much gone already and Bobby Bowden would be close if he weren't Bobby Bowden. Maryland has looked shitty in beating William and Mary and MTSU while getting bitch-slapped by WVU. Virginia has lost to Pittsburgh, beat Montana 13-12, and lost to a directional Michigan school. We've lost to fucking Akron and Southern Miss while not beating a 1-AA team by too much. UNC got smacked by Rutgers and barely beat 1-AA Furman. FSU and Gtech don't look to great against Troy and Miami gets killed by Louisville.
Boston College and Clemson are doing the best for us right now and neither of them look like they could hang with any of the other BCS teams in the country. I wouldn't be surprised to see the ACC go 0-fer in bowl games except that Miami and FSU might go to some shitty bowls against really bad opponents.
But man, things changed in a couple years. All the coaches who were being praised and worshipped are now being torn apart by the media and the fans. Our heavyweights aren't so heavy anymore. FSU and Miami aren't scary anymore. Virginia Tech is still pretty decent. Clemson is actually doing okay. But our middle-of-the-pack teams are getting smacked around by middle-of-the-pack non-BCS teams. The whole league sucks.
Did we just judge these new coaches too soon?? And will they get better?? What is the future of the ACC?? Will Miami and FSU get back to their former status?? Will they have to wait until Bowden and Coker are gone??
The future looked so bright...

I'm not convinced VT is that good this year. GT is pretty solid and I do think VT is as well, but until they play someone I'm witholding judgment.

Just a little sidenote on this. It's easy to see when Miami's downturn came. It came when Coker was hired [and his recruits started playing fulltime] and began to actually make Miami football a college program and not just a pro stopover. Virginia Tech was a 'decent' program after Mike Vick left, but certainly nothing elite. The last 3 years in the Big East saw VT finish 8-4, 10-4, and 8-5 (never finishing with less then 3 big east losses).

what has happened to the ACC is that we are in a massive qb lull. no one has had a good qb, w/ just a couple of exceptions, since rivers in the acc.
d. weatherford: marginal k. wright: marginal r. ball: average w. proctor: actually looks halfway decent so far but hasn't played that many games hollenbach: average to below average r. skinner (m. mauck's replacement at Wake): doing alright for a freshman, but still avg. at best t. lewis: duke's freshman qb who looked good against wake, but still a freshman stone/evans: stone was below average, we will find out about evans dailey/sexton: sexton was good against Furman but that was Furman; neither qb better than average any other game m. ryan: prob. the best acc qb this year; pretty poised and overall a good college qb virginia: i don't even know who their qb is but he has to be bad b/c uva is awful this year s. glennon: has looked average against duke and unc; not sold on him at all yet
that list right there is pretty pitiful: compare that w/ a list of sec or big 10 qb's and you can see why the acc has declined recently in my opinion 9/21/2006 3:16:58 PM |

The main reason the ACC sucks this year is that it lost 81 players to the NFL draft, of which 12 went in the first round (which was a record for the 1st round for any conference). Talent like that doesn't replace itself in one year.
The QB play is a big reason as well... 9/21/2006 4:12:26 PM |

That's because some of the die-hard nutjob fans down here in Miami are pissed that Butch Davis left to go to the NFL. The University, however, absolutely loved Butch Davis. Sciano at Rutgers is someone people like, but he is too much like a Dennis Erickson from what I hear (shady and a used-car salesman), which would be kryptonite for Miami football. Especially for a program that has been cleaning up.
Consider Coker done unless a miracle happens. The Herald and the news down here have been constantly clamoring over getting someone new. Maybe Randy Shannon, maybe Butch Davis. There was a huge campaign down here called "Bring Back Butch". But who knows. It can be anyone at this point. Who knows.9/21/2006 10:29:30 PM |

^ Not exactly, see my previous post. There are more people who want him back than those that don't. Paul Dee may not be too pissed off still.
Sciano would be bad for Miami.

^Haha.
and
^^I talked to a big Miami alum ('97 I think) just yesterday that said most of the big boys are still pissed off about Davis. It's not the fact that he left...it's the way he left. He left the day before signing day and didn't let anybody know what he was doing. Add to that that Davis REALLY wants the Cowboys job and is just waiting for Parcells to quit...and you've got enough to see why he probably won't be the next coach of the 'Canes. 9/22/2006 9:44:58 AM |

Coker's excuses for why his team is shit this morning on ESPN were almost as bad as Chuck's. He basically said, we won 30-whatever games in a row before our loss to OSU, etc, etc. Yeah but that was all with Butch Davis's players dumbass. 9/22/2006 11:11:25 AM |

Very true. He was quoted to telling his fans and the media "I am Miami's coach in 2001." Then gets an offer to coach the Browns and bolts.
However, UM President Donna Shalala loved Davis because he instilled much-needed integrity into the program and he built Miami back up after probation. I know for a fact the BOT at UM liked Davis because he brought positive attention to Miami. However, there is still a contigency that is angry about Butch's departure- just as they were about Schleneberger and Jimmy Johnson leaving.
Coaching football on the professional level is very enticing. The four last coaches at UM left for pro jobs (with Schlenberger's falling through and he ended up at Louisville). Miami fans that don't realize how lucarative NFL jobs are need to wake up... and get over it. College coaches don't make good NFL coaches most of the times. Butch Davis would be terrible for the Cowboys (as he was for the Browns), but would be a great college coach. His NFL experience would be valuable for a college program. Don't count Davis out for being Miami's next coach. I am not saying he is a shoe-in either.
I don't think Randy Shannon is a great candidate and Greg Schiano at Rutgers is kinda shady.
