The site will mainly house a message board 9/22/2006 8:46:36 PM |

depends on what package you want to use for your message board
if it's something like crazyweb, it needs a windows server Linux usually has PHP, mySQL, and Apache Windows hosts usually run IIS, MS SQL, and ASP .NET
whatever your package uses, you need that kind of hosting 9/22/2006 9:03:17 PM |

I was looking at godaddy's setup. If I go w/ linux, they have Simple Machines Forum (SMF) and PHP-Nuke. The windows has support for ASP.NET Community Server Kit. I was also considering using something like postnuke that would let others edit the site 9/22/2006 9:37:39 PM |

for just a message board, I would definatley go with LAMP, much less expensive...
but it depends if your comfortable with all of those technologies under linux

Depends whether you are running the server yourself or are paying to have it hosted. If you are running it yourself, pick a system you are comfortable with and know you can secure properly. If it's being hosted ... pick the one that better suits the technology you are going to use. 9/24/2006 8:11:43 AM |

Thanks. I plan to have it hosted. I messed around Community Server using my friend's Godaddy account. So far I've found it very hard to customize, so I might stick with Linux hosting since they have more options for forum software 9/24/2006 8:56:10 AM |

Heh, I remember the day when the idea of linux having more options for software for anything was laughable. 9/24/2006 11:32:46 AM |
