If that's last years model samsung, then it will look pretty terrible for non HD, and that model also had some problems with video delay and games.

I think you could get a Sony LCD projection TV that would look and work better than that overall, for about the same price.

thats why it is $1100, i was under the impression about $500 more would get me something to do 1080p.

Main reasoning is, 1080p uses a different codec, much higher bandwidth and processing. It will be several years before cable company jumps on that...

i was talking about 1080i, just cuz thats what a lot/most of the broadcasts are in (to my knowledge).

i use 1080i for my xbox 360 cuz my tv is older and doesnt support 720p. trust me, you can tell it looks a fuckton better. dont let people hate on 1080i. im sure 1080p will be better, but it still looks nice.

i dont think we need to have this turn into another 720p vs. 1080i debate. they both are the same in my eyes. abc, espn are 720p; nbc and cbs are 1080i. if 1080i was bad, then they wouldnt broadcast that way. it frankly does not matter but most higher end hdtvs display both and your hdtv cable box will display the channels in their native resolutions.

btw, i prefer panasonic.

This is not last years model (HL-R4667W). This is a new model (HL-S4666W) with "game mode" which is supposed to decrease or eliminate the lag. I agree that this TV is optimized for HD sources, but as long as you are using a digital signal of some kind the non HD stuff looks good enough to warrant the $1200.

DLP has a great picture and I almost bought one of those instead of ^^ but I didn't want to have to worry about replacing the bulb in the DLP after 3-4 years. Bulbs last around 6,000 hours and the avg. household watches 5 hours of TV a day gives about 4.5 years of use. Replacing the bulb will cost around $200 including parts and labor. One bulb justifies the cost of an LCD.

Definately a great price and worth the money... check out circuit city reviews as well..

Reviews...but go to the store to see for urself...ED is not the same as HD...we all know this....but looking side by side, u cant tell the difference with MOST HD sets...

In the store this set was on the same channel as the HD's were on. The Signal was in HD (must point that out) and this EDTV dominated the room. I could not see spending more money on a smaller TV with a less impressive picture. For the hose heads out there, 480p IS considered HD. Can you recieve 480p on a standard def tv? No, you cannot. 480p displays twice the detail as 480i (standard).
Pros: ***Cost verses HD of the same size
***Unbelieveable Picture. Looks equal to or better than most HD sets. Including Sony, JVC and Mitsubishi.
***Large, but not too imposing
***Very easy to use remote

Update**** In respones to the other review from a retired person..... I am an engineer. 480i only displays 240 lines of resolution at one time, and shifts the other 240 lines in the next cycle. 480p displays ALL 480 lines at the same time. That being said. 1080i displays only 540 lines at one time and shifts the other 540 in the next cycle. the diffference between the 2 displays is a mere 60 lines of resoultion at ONE TIME and about $1000 or more. 1080p and is another story, and will show a little difference between 480p and 1080p. A similar comparison would be between a 600mhz computer and an 800mhz computer. The increase in performance is very slight, and hardly noticeable. The best way to see this is to go to a store and view this set when going toe to toe with a true HD. Bury your ego, and you will note that the difference between the 2 formats is not worth the money."

I went into Best Buy yesterday looking to buy a new TV..

I wanted a nice TV similar to all the ones posted in this thread. I looked at the EDTV that Di bought and I liked it, but you can easily tell a difference between it and the 42' Panasonic HDTV Plasma that I'm leaning towards. I'm also looking at the one that pmcassel posted in the initial post.

Anyone who actually knows about TVs can help me out here? I'm working with a space that is just over 40' in width and that Panasonic Plasma is right at 40'.

No real budget, just want a sweet TV. Any suggestions?
