Don't get me wrong, I am all about them having and needing their team back to get back to normal or whatever, but its been just over a year, and they are dropping that much fucking money on that? Thats just some bullshit, there is a ton of other more significant, necessary, and imortant things that money could and should have been spent on in that city.
But it does look badass after the renovation. But I am thinking people would rather have houses, and other shit repaired instead.

Ok, so there are still people living in fucking FEMA trailers, how about you go down and tell all them they could have had a house built for them, but the money went to go repair a building for sports instead. See how far you get before you get killed.

You are still wrong, even though I agree with you that it serves more purpose, but like I said, go tell the people living in trailers and with no jobs, that they needed to spend $185mil for people with money and homes to go watch games, and spend all that money on new badass luxury boxes so rich people can watch the game in style. You aren't gonna win this argument.

I can agree there, but the main point is, this money could have been spent a lot better especially since the status of the team staying isnt certain.
All I am saying is if you were homeless etc because of the hurricaine, you'd prolly be pretty fucking pissed that $185mil just got dropped on a sports stadium.

That actually makes a lot of sense, and I can see it from that perspective, I guess you aren't gonna make everyone happy with this, and when you look at all the money already spent, $185mil isnt that big a %, but still, it just seems somewhat silly to drop that much when there are still people in need.9/25/2006 8:28:41 PM |

and on top of that, you really have to wonder. All those people still living in trailers a vast majority of them are in the lower 9th are they not? Perhaps the money isnt being spent there because they don't think its a good idea to rebuild everything the way it was before the hurricane.
Urban planning takes time, a building can be rennovated with much greater ease. 9/25/2006 8:35:21 PM |

first of all I am guessing insurance paid for part of it, so this is not money earmarked for the public anyways....the sugar bowl could bring in multi-millions, and maybe even cover this tab in 3-4 years with total economic input
and this argument could be extended ad nauseum....why have any pro sports when there are homeless around, why not take the money for the RBC and carter finley and go help the homeless in downtown raleigh.....i know katrina pulls at the heartstrings, but spending money on pro sports is a nationwide phenomenon that is about as american as apple pie, so if the ny yankees are going to ask the city and state for 800 million to build their place, why can't new orleans spend 185 million to feel whole again 9/25/2006 8:37:56 PM |

You are going to help these people by creating an atmosphere for commerce. Shelling out cash is nice, but its not a long term solution. However, investing into infrastructure that will bring in big money to the area is what this city needs. 9/25/2006 9:14:51 PM |

Both the Mets and Yankees new stadiums are privately funded. In fact the city issued bonds that will be paid back over time for each so NYC will actually make money of them. The only thing the city is paying for is the infrastructure changes, which are minimal.9/25/2006 9:31:06 PM |

$185 million isn't that much really.
LA wants to spend $800 million to reonovate the coliseum for an NFL team..

Now that is freaking ridiculous! It won't even be a new stadium! Consider the construction costs of some very modern stadiums:
Heinz Field: $281 mil Qwest Field: $300 mil Gillette Stadium: $325 mil Reliant Stadium: $352 mil Ford Field: $430 mil Cardinals Stadium: $455 mil Lincoln Financial Field: $512 mil 9/25/2006 9:45:31 PM |

Do they really need a dome in Arizona?
Doesn't seem like it would rain enough to justify paying what was probably an extra 150 million for a dome and retractable field. Seems like they just did it to stand out. 9/25/2006 10:01:38 PM |
