"Show them you want it
Our Opinion: All members of the N.C. State community, including students, staff, alumni and fans, should provide full force support for the Student Government-sponsored rally for tailgating.
Issue date: 10/3/06 Section: Viewpoint
PrintEmail Article Tools Page 1 of 1 A silent and blind student body.

That's the only thing the Administration needs to put N.C. State tradition to death, and that's what it's hoping to find here.

It believes this student body is too disorganized, too passive and too unprepared to initiate a protest of their policies that is of any significance.

It believes they know what is in the best interest for football fans and that students' suggestions are to be taken with a grain of salt.

It believes tailgating is not an NCSU tradition, but a liability, and the sooner it is dissolved, the better.

We believe differently. We need to show it.

Student Government is finally showing it can advocate for student issues with results that matter by holding a rally today at 4 p.m. at the Bell Tower.

This rally is intended to show the local community that we are fed up with this administration's indifference toward the preservation of tailgating and its stubborn unwillingness to compromise on the issue. As far as the administration is concerned, its Tailgating Task Force has handed down its decree from the Throne of Traditions Sacrifice with the final say on tailgating.

Administration is making no serious effort to address student desires. Only a half-hearted willingness to let student leaders complain and pretend that their voice is being heard.

No more.

We need to get behind our student leaders for them to adequately advocate for us. We need to join them in one voice directed at the powers that be who wield control over fun and tradition. We need to show the local community that this is an issue that is not going away, and most importantly, one that matters to us.

For students to hope for any sort of change in this administration's imposed policies, the rally for tailgating must be an astronomical success -- nothing less.

Student Government anticipates 50 students in attendance, with an ideal number of 200 participants being an amazing success. It is setting its sights too low; such mediocre involvement would doom the rally and prove the Administration is right that students aren't motivated enough to care.

We must earn a victory for NCSU tradition by demonstrating wide-spread support for tailgating and our student leaders' fight to change the current course of its fate.

If we don't make this rally significant -- with hundreds of students, staff, alumni and fans participating full force, broadcast on every local news channel and on every newspaper page -- then we don't deserve to complain about these restrictions.

We deserve instead to be force-fed the Administration's policy on fun while we watch tailgating maintain its current course down the can."

^It might get a couple hours of tailgating.

But screw the rally, we will get the 1-2 extra hours without it. Boycott the 1st Qtr and I hope you are never allowed in CF again.

Boycott the first quarter of the Nationaly Telivised FSU game??? What a great dumbass IDEA. Its not that our fan base isn't already made fun of by people now your going to give them a reason to? Go ahead and boycott the first quarter all 250 of you will seem like alot missing when the other 2,250 people go to the game. I mean seriously why would you sit outside in the tailgatting area while there was a game on? We aren't a dang liberal arts college that should protest everything. 4 Hours is alot of time and since your only 20 jtmartin I don't even think you know what a tailgate is about. Its not the extra time to get drunk its time to meet people hang out cook food which i see less and less people doing these days. The ticket distributing policy might suck now but nothing is ever perfect.

^^you probably see people socializing less and less food being cooked because of the tailgating rules. i'm a jr. and it's somewhat hard to have time to get to your parking spot, cook your food, clean up, socialize, go to the walk of champions, toss around a football, and get in the stadium an hour early, with only 4 hours.

yes, i showed up to games a hour before kick-off even before the ticket policy change cause i want to get a good seat and support my team. Now that it's even shorter the entire student body has the right to be livid about this.

the students have a right to be mad about the 4 hr. rule, noise rule, no beer pong/keg rule, allowing only students with tickets(ALL students should be allowed to attend the walk of champions and have the gameday experience), not increasing student section size over the past 10 yrs., and now finally the whole ticket policy. students have had a bullseye on our backs for the past two years.

well that rally got us absolutely no where...so much for the 285 students on facebook who said they were coming...and it turned into a "what did the chancellor's letter say" because students didn't get a fair chance to voice their opinions at all!

^how many people actually showed up?

I'm thinking that we need to do something on a game day. Like go through the lots and get the alumni involved . . . I'd think they woudl be just as interested. But because of work for a lot of people the FSU game wouldn't be good, and the Wake game is so early.

i found it amusing that student government sent out an email telling people to protest

it just doesn't seem right that they'd be advocating protesting

but maybe 50 people were there? that's funny/sad

don't worry people. The alumni are more than pissed off. sure the administration won't do anything to help the students, but I'm in the alumni lot and there is already talks of lessening those restrictions.

Money talks, a protest of 50 people doesn't.

i mean, if nobody showed up to a game...even if it was just the students...things would change pretty quickly-esp if espn covered the story

if no students showed up they would just sell student section seats for the next game

students have no power

realize this

but ESPN won't cover the story...they don't do interest stories like that
And no, things won't change except for the school selling student seats...

Unless we find some big donors who are willing to press the school where it hurts, things won't change...let's not dilute ourselves into thinking that not coming into the game at kickoff will cause a change

My personal decision is to boycott all donations to the school until it start listening to it's largest money maker...

i can not beleive some tools on technicianonline.com actually voted to get rid of tailgating.

I mean c'mon just b.c you do not enjoy means you should ruin the fun for everyone.
Personally i think 4 hours is enough for me. i usually show up 2-3 hours before the game, however, i beleive that if diehard fans want to get out there at 9 am then they should be allowed to.

If nothing else it cuts down traffic getting into the game since people spread out the time they show up to the game
