Wee Heavy Scotch Style Ale by Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery
Go buy this now.
It's heavy on malts with a flavor like chocolate on dark fruits. Some toffee aftertaste. With some sweetness, it's better a little warmer than fridge temp.
Pure beer heaven, if you ask me.

Cottonwood: Pumpkin ale - Very tasty Brown ale - Meh, I've had much better. A little too fruity for me(even for a brown ale). Endo IPA - Nice as a change up.
Edenton: Big Boss IPA - It's a good representation of the style but I can't have more than one at a time.
Carolina Brewing Co: Nut Brown Ale - I can drink craploads of this. Pale Ale - I think it has a nice balance(actually prefer it to Sierra Nevada pale ale).
Highland Brewing: Everything they make is really good. 10/4/2006 7:39:01 PM |

Given the right conditions, I could most likely finish a 12 pack of CBC pale with ease...it's a great "drinking" beer 10/4/2006 8:19:24 PM |

I love CBC. I'm lucky enough to work at a place that has Pale Ale and their seasonals on tap, there was nothing like finishing my shift and tossing back a few Summer Wheats or Spring Bocks for free. Carolina Blonde and Carolina Light (can't remember the name of the brewery, but they're in Mooresville) are also amazing. 10/4/2006 10:09:35 PM |

I'm going to be in Raleigh for the weekend. Are there any good local seasonals that I should pick up while I'm in town? Is Edenton's Pumpkinhead out yet? 10/4/2006 10:28:57 PM |

Yeah, that's out...as well as the Duck-Rabbit baltic porter. Cottonwood Pumpkin too. There's not much else as far as seasonals. 10/4/2006 10:33:07 PM |

i had a left hand brewery imperial stout a little bit ago...one of the best i've had, so if you like stouts i'd try it. only place i've seen it is peace street market. 10/5/2006 1:26:53 AM |

The Duck Rabbit Wee Heavy is a seasonal.
There are lots of Oktoberfest marezens out right now, not sure if anyone local is doing that.
Picked up some St. Barnedaus Abt 12 the other day, I'll be trying that soon.
Also, Val Diu is an AWESOME belgian brewery. Everything they make causes me to have a mouthgasm. 10/5/2006 1:37:31 PM |

Does anyone else microwave their beer?
I'm being serious.
Fridge temp is too cold for lots of craft beers. I usually pour mine in a glass and microwave it for 13 seconds. It warms it up about 10 degrees and really brings out a lot of good flavors. 10/5/2006 2:27:11 PM |

no, but I microwave white wine all the time. The fridge is indeed too cold.

Unibroue's Trois Pistoles is one of my new favorites. So yummy!
The various Chimays are great, too, but kind of pricy for 24oz bottles. 10/5/2006 3:58:20 PM |

microwave? that's kinda funny
I usually just take it out of the fridge awhile beforehand. I've also got a small dorm fridge for beer that I keep turned up as high as it will go so it's usually not a problem. 10/5/2006 4:02:58 PM |

For the IPA lovers, I suggest Victory's Hop Wallop if you can find it. I place it just behind DFH 90min IPA as my favorite IPA. 10/5/2006 5:43:34 PM |

Mash House Hoppy Hour IPA is probably the best brewed in this state of those I have tried, so that too. 10/5/2006 7:15:47 PM |
PIKE_style03 Veteran 270 Posts user info edit post |
^^ both Hop Wallop and 90 min are considered "double" or "imperial" IPAs due to their higher alcohol levels and more malty character. For a true IPA, I would recommend Victory Hop Devil or Edenton's Big Boss IPA if you want something brewed locally.
On another note, just got some "Surrender Monkey" Belgian Farmgouse Ale brewed by Edenton Brewing Co. in a 750mL wax dipped bottle. The had it at Whole Foods, but it's selling out pretty quick from what I hear.

^^You could go down to Edenton's brewery off Capitol Blvd and see if they have any left. If they dont have any more of it bottled I'm sure they could hook you up with a growler full of it if there's any left in the tanks. 10/6/2006 5:55:35 PM |
cheezcurd All American 1914 Posts user info edit post |
^^^oh shit, i thougt you were talking about golden monkey for some reason
Whole Foods pretty much ran out of Surrender Monkey the day it came in. Raleigh Times bar has bottles for sale for ~$15.00, more than double the WF price. At one point it was on tap at Horniblow's, Raleigh Times, and 42nd Street, and I assume they all still have it. I think a growler from Horniblow's is probably about $15.00.
