We haven't done it since we moved in years ago soooo I'm pretty sure they're gross. With it getting close to time to cut the heat on, I don't want anything potentially catching fire. I know I could use whitepages but there are a LOT of companies in there.
Anyone got a referral and an idea of how much it costs? 10/6/2006 4:42:10 PM |

I've never heard of anyone cleaning their ducts. 10/6/2006 4:53:55 PM |

[insert masterbation joke]
i've been at my house for 3 years and have never cleaned the ducts. I always figured that the slightly nasty smell the first time you start the heater was the cleaning process running.

I've personally looked into ductwork that hasn't been opened in 20 or more years. It looked just pure-t fuckin' rosy.
If you change your filters regularly and use a good fanfold filter media (Flanders and 3M both offer good ones), then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. 10/6/2006 5:04:57 PM |

I would recommend having your ducts clean, you don't have to do it every year but if your house is older and they have never been clean I would go for it. I had my entire heat/ac/duct replaced and before I had them replaced I noticed my allergies were real bad. Since Ive had the new system no more allergies! Also I took a look at the ducts when the guys were removing them and it made me SICK.. GD they were disgusting, all kinds of mold and dirt in them. 10/6/2006 5:38:02 PM |

^ well since the house was 20+ years old when I bought it and I had the new unit put in within 2 years.. I'd say the odds are it wasn't anything I did.. And I change my filters every 6 months.
But thanks for playing. 10/6/2006 6:06:44 PM |

Yeah that funky egg smell is the propane kicking in the first time, but I still get a little nervous. My mother-in-law gets hers cleaned every other year but they also have an older home.
Hmm. Maybe I don't have to do it after all. House is ~5 years old, new AC unit 3 years ago, and I'm freakin anal about changing the filters ... I use the ones in the red packaging that 3M makes. I have two big ones in the walls - 16x20 on one end and 20x20 on the other - do you think there are others under the house I need to be aware of? 10/6/2006 8:05:21 PM |

No, there are no air returns under your house. It's not like they hide them.

pretty sure they're designed for 3-4 months of use. but 6 months is better than never.
