it used to be oldies til monday when it began a robot voice countdown for two straight days with random quotes

then wednesday night i turned to it and its country

and then i turned to 106.1 on the way home from work

a lot of you guys probably aren't old enough to remember when RDU was *THE* station in this area. If it was cool, it was happening on RDU.

They went downhill after they switched their morning show from John Boy & Billy. Used to listen all the time on my way to HS. Then I got satellite radio and don't care if they cut these FM stations anymore.

i always thought john boy and billy went downhill in the late 90s when they stopped talking about anything that didn't have to do with nascar and wrestling...i never picked it back up, so maybe they changed

i mean i don't hate nascar and wrestling, but i'm not really interested in hearing about it every morning...or any morning talk radio anyway i guess

but then again i really only listen to 88.1, 88.7, 88.9, 89.3, 89.7, 90.7, 91.5 anyhow

i wonder if this had anything to do with 96 rock changing from new rock to classic rock - ie, are those two sister stations that just decided for a wholesale change of format together? i mean country kicks modern rock's butt on the radio in terms of ratings, so i guess it makes business sense

96.1 is pretty decent these days. The hangover cafe is coming back on Sunday mornings if you like the unplugged shit. 103.9 The Drive is good rock if you're down towards fayetnam, they always play the full cut of long songs.

Unfortunately, 88.1's signal still dies a mere 5 miles from Hillsborough street, for me and my 20 year old truck radio, anyway.

Full circle. Back in 1984 WQDR was the local badass rock station which suddenly made a format change to country which stands to this day. Most of the rock on air talent went to WRDU to carry on the rock format.

there was a period there before Clear Channel came in and took over all of them that 93.9 was a rock station as well. (94Z) and the battles with 106.1 were awesome.

It had to have changed over sometime yesterday since thursday it was still playing old rock. this re-affirms 3 things for all Triangle driving commutes now:

1) Just keep it locked on 88.1
2) Have an Ipod/MP3 player hookup
3) Be a real idiot and buy XM/Sirius radio.

By gods this is just fucked up. First 96.1 goes to absolute shit. Then this. Awesome. Thanks.

it is possible that the country switch is a stunt. There are rumors that come monday 106.1 will become a CHR/Rhytmic station (Think G105 but with more hip-hop/rap type stuff. Higher energy) with Whoopi Goldberg in the mornings. 100.7 would be re-launched as 100.7 WRDU and would basically be the old RDU but "better".

Frankly, I don't know what the hell is going on with the situation. I will point 2 things though:

1. When Oldies 100.7 went off the air and the River first came on, they stunted that weekend with 100.7 "the Bull"... a country station.

2. If you go to http://www.1061therooster.com it is redirecting to WQDR's website. As much as I would agree that Clear Channel is retarded, I don't think they are dumb enough to let the main URL for a new station get snapped up by a competitor. (esp. since that domain was registered on Sat.)
