It seems that those guys (at least, I think it's those guys) who said it would be possible to make something invisible using meta materials have made a material that bends microwaves. They say it was a rush job too, and they should be able to advance the tech quickly.
Here's a better article: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-10/du-fdo101206.php

Anyone have a link to a more technical explination. I'm curious how they get light to "flow" around the object..... unless it's just a matter of diffraction propegated over distance. 10/19/2006 3:07:50 PM |

That second link has the researcher's name, just search journals for him, and you'll probably find a good explanation. That's assuming you have access to journals (like being a student). 10/19/2006 3:20:22 PM |

I think the military has been tampering with this "stealth camouflage" technology for quite a while now, so this thread is very much outdated. No offense or anything. 10/19/2006 4:16:34 PM |

Earl, please qualify that "I think" into "I know" by providing links to credible source(s).

Quote : | "Two of Maxwell's equations, appropriate to describe wave propagation within a material, are summarized in the figure to the right. Without going into the detail of what these equations mean, or how they are solved, we can observe the following: There are two fields that are coupled in these equations--one electric (E) and the other magnetic (H). In addition, there are two other parameters, called the electric permittivity (Greek symbol epsilon) and the magnetic permeability (Greek symbol mu)." |
Quote : | ". The region in the upper right quadrant is where the permittivity and permeability are both positive. Since most known materials have this property, this region of material parameter space has been the most explored. However, the larger part of the map--three quarters, in fact--has been much less explored. This is because materials are just not so easily available in these regions. In fact, materials that lie in the third quadrant, where the permittivity and permeaiblity are both less than zero, do not appear in nature at all!" |
