Among the 10 candidates, they mentioned Bobby Petrino and Tyrone Willingham from Washington.....

Quote : | "If North Carolina does have to hire a new football coach, these 10 individuals meet some key criteria. They have clean NCAA records, Division I-A head coaching experience and likely would be within Carolina's financial reach.
In alphabetical order:
Butch Davis, NFL broadcaster. Was 51-20 as the head coach at Miami from 1995-2000.
Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt head coach. Former Clemson defensive back and longtime head coach at Furman, Johnson is 72-73 overall in college, including 14-39 at Vanderbilt.
Paul Johnson, Navy head coach. A 1979 graduate of Western Carolina, Johnson is 33-23 at Navy and 95-33 overall as a head coach at Georgia Southern and Navy.
Steve Kragthorpe, Tulsa head coach. The son of a coach and 1988 West Texas graduate is 26-18 as a head coach, all at Tulsa.
Mike Leach, Texas Tech head coach. He has a law degree from Pepperdine and is 52-31 in seven seasons at Texas Tech.
Steve Logan, offensive coordinator in NFL Europe for Rhein Fire. Logan went 69-58 with five bowl appearances in 11 seasons at East Carolina.
Gary Patterson, Texas Christian head coach. Patterson is 44-30 in six seasons at TCU.
Bobby Petrino, Louisville head coach. A native of Helena, Mont., Petrino is 35-8 in four seasons at Louisville.
Greg Schiano, Rutgers head coach. A native of Wyckoff, N.J., Schiano is 25-39 in six seasons with the Scarlet Knights, including 6-0 this season.
Tyrone Willingham, Washington head coach. A Kinston native, he was 44-36-1 in seven seasons at Stanford and 21-15 in three seasons at Notre Dame. Washington is 4-3 this season after going 2-9 in Willingham's first season " |

lol, why would Petrino make a lateral move? He has the run of recruits in KY and a conference he could compete year in and year out for the best bowls in. He isn't leaving to come to a second rate program like UNC. He didn't leave for freaking LSU even. 10/19/2006 2:19:56 PM |

I don't think UNC would be a lateral move. It would definately be a step back for Petrino. UNC is nowhere near what Louisville is in football. Their two games against them in the last few years proved that point. 10/19/2006 2:22:50 PM |

Justin Burke? He would have been behind one of the best QBs in the nation who already had a very, very good backup (cantwell) for 2 years. I bet Petrino didn't even go after him and waste a scholly..
^^^ I was speaking more of program prestige/tradition. Obviously UL is leagues ahead of UNC right now..

I was thinking about this the other night. When does Spurrier's contract end at South Carolina? I wonder if he would be back on the radar.....or on the "reserve contacts list" while UNC gave Bunting another couple of years. 10/19/2006 2:27:22 PM |

My dream-come-true would be for UNC to go on a deep coaching search only to get turned down by every major/midmajor and Div. 2 coach so they have to settle with Alge Crumpler after Torry Holt makes a mockery of them by offering his services as a joke... 10/19/2006 2:35:20 PM |

I think we can all agree that Miami and UNC will be the schools that need new coaches at the end of the season. I do not see Willingham or Pertrino going anywhere. Everyone else will surely look at Miami before they consider going to UNC. 10/19/2006 2:36:02 PM |

Logan is quite content with his NFL europe job. He'd get better offers than UNC if he showed an interest in coming back to college football. UNC's problem is that they'd never fork out the dough. Spurrier would go back to Duke before UNC. 10/19/2006 2:46:55 PM |

Why would Patterson leave TCU or Leach leave Texas Tech for UNC???
The only realistic ones are Johnson from Navy, Johnson from Vandy, and Logan.
Logan is the one I could see taking it the most. He got a raw deal at ECU. 10/19/2006 2:49:35 PM |

The UNC football job is just not that attractive. Playing second fiddle to basketball will not appeal to many of the coaches on their list. They'll wind up doing the same thing they did before:
1) Claim big names as interviewers. 2) Claim big names could not stand up to UNC standards when said big names turn down job. 3) Hire alumnus coach who goes sub .500 for half a decade or more. 4) Repeat steps 1 through 4.
I could see a Catholic priest applying for that job.... Or Mark Foley maybe.... 10/19/2006 2:50:02 PM |

Paul Johnson would kill us too. Navy plays just like Wake who obviously owns us. Navy just doesn't quite have the athletes that Wake does...and UNC can get better athletes than Wake or Navy.
I think Johnson is the scariest name on the list for us. 10/19/2006 2:50:34 PM |

for those of you that think UNC could land Logan....i fart in your general direction UNC would have to throw more money than the general assembly would allow to land him as he is happy w/ NFL-E
i think you can pretty bank on not seeing him coaching in NCAA for several years unless some dream job comes up and the UNC is job is no dream
Spurrier, are you kidding me....i hope that was a joke / have you forgot that he shot them down once in 2003 (?year)
butch davis....give me a break / if he goes back into coaching it will be to replace Larry Cocksucker at the U

for the record, amato is 3-3 against bunting......so neither coach really has an edge except for the fact that amato has had more to work with and that we actually won 2 years ago in chapel hell but lost because of an inbred, down synrdome afflicted referee...10/20/2006 12:49:58 PM |

Logan will not go to UNC. you can pretty much put your life savings on that. He got a RAW deal at ECU because he was doing one heck of a job there and ECU fans got in their heads they could go big time and he had one year where they regressed and they fired him. Look where it got them. He has gone on record more than once as saying he does not want to play the underdog role again. If he did come back to college football, it would have to be somewhere that he had the athletes. Most people close to him know this because he is loving the NFL-E where he has players that are the same as the opposing teams players and can line up against them and go head to head. Robots vs. Robots so to speak. He never had this at ECU.
Paul Johnson is scary because he has a winning record at the Naval Academy. That right there says enough about his coaching ability.
Petrino will not leave. No way on Willingham. He is getting things rolling at Washington a little bit and he likes PAC-10 football.
Butch Davis is a maybe, not sure what people have said about him really.
No way on Mike Leach eiether, or the Rutgers coach. 10/20/2006 12:52:27 PM |

Check your math, hes 2-3 against Bunting, although the 3 is more about Carolina always bringing their A game when they play us than Bunting. Whatever their biggest weakness is coming into the game, they will always find it when they play us.10/20/2006 3:31:01 PM |
