i'm searching for a small dog for my Grandmother
she recently lost her 2 dogs - a scottish terrier and a yorkie.

She's home all day and is lonely. my grandfather is never around. They do have a 10 yr old Yorkie but it travels with my Grandfather and is "his" dog. It doesn't sit or pay any mind to my Grandma.

She wants something small. under 25-30 lbs. At least 2 years old. house trained. all that. Up to date on shots and fixed would be bonus but i'm willing to take care of anything that needs to be done.
breed doesn't matter, mixed breeds are fine. Special needs dogs are okay as long as they don't have crazy vet bills and medical expenses..
She has a fenced in yard and tons of dog toys, beds, and supplies. The dog would be spoiled rotten.

I've been searching through all the rescues and shelters i know but small dogs are adopted so fast.

She lives in Connecticut so i'd have to keep it here with me until i go home for Thanksgiving. So it MUST get along with other dogs. (i have 4 )

that's sweet, i'm glad you're takin care of your family. me mum sells champion teacup poodles (4-6lbs). but i don't think that they're in your budget

nah she doesn't care for cats.

i've found homes for over 30 dogs this year that i've pulled from kill shelters.
I just never come across small breeds. and if i do they're usually mean.

i'd much rather rescue or adopt versus buy a purebred.
I don't make much and spend a fortune on my animals as it is.

I'm going to see a min schaunzer next week so hopefully he's the one for her.

she wants something small so it can sit next to her on the couch. and something she can carry if she has too. She gets around just fine and is fully capable. f

I'm definitely not looking to sell mine, but I will suggest a breed. I have a boston terrier that absolutely loves my grandparents and my 3-yr old nephew. It is a very versatile breed, we saved mine from a puppy farm and he is well tempered with not health problems. There is a boston terrier rescue in north carolina that I know of. I think their website is http://www.btrnc.com, but google it to make sure. A lot of people I know have this breed and it in every case it has been a great family pet. Best of luck!

^The only problem I'd say with that is that they can be really hyper and jumpy, which may not be good for grandmotherly types. My brother's Boston would basically jump up and hit you in the face and knock you over. My aunt's Boston did that too...

I think it has to do with the time you spend with them, especially if you were to get an older one who was already more mellow. Mine doesn't jump, other than in my lap. I know a puppy who is pretty hyper, but the older dogs usually calm down. Of course, there are exceptions....

Why don't you try the shelters up there when you go back? There's a fairly large one in Rocky Hill off the Berlin Turnpike, and one in Torrington off of Rt.8/Rt.4. Your grandmother could always come with you to pick one, unless it's supposed to be a surprise

I realize that every dog is different and you can't base energy level or any expectations on breed alone. it's not a surprise. she knows i'm looking. I don't mind paying an adoption fee if the animal is up to date on shots and fixed. but i'm not going to pay for a purebred animal from a breeder. i've rescued and fostered too many animals and know there is one in a rescue or just needs re-homing.

Boston Terriers are okay. the ones i've known were nice enough.

I found a scottie that needs a home so hopefully he'll work out. she's had like 12 scotties and they're her favorite.
